COURSE CODE AND TITLE: THC 212k PHILIPPINE TOURISM, GEOGRAPHY AND CULTURE COURSE DESCRIPTION This course presents comprehensive coverage of the major tourist destinations in the Philippines. Major discussions will be on political structures and subdivision, geographical characteristics, major attractions, gastronomy, culture and traditions of the various regions of the country leading to the realization of the potentials of the Tourism industry of the Philippines. Students will also have orientations. about the mechanism, logistics, operations and management of the tourism network system in the Philippines with its inherent physical and cultural resources as seen in the various provinces in the country.

COURSE WELCOME AND OVERVIEW Welcome to this course, Philippine Tourism Geography and Culture. I am Maria Christina Maniquiz; you can call me Ma’am Winkle. This course will help you understand the general dynamics of domestic tourism. It would also help you appreciate the value of the different areas in the Philippines as tourist destinations and local travelers. You are expected to be resourceful in reading and making sure that you completed the tasks given to you. Please also submit the requirements before the deadline.

COURSE OUTCOMES At the end of the course you are expected to: 1. Describe the touristic value of the tourist destinations in the different provinces and cities of the Philippines. 2. Identify the various provinces in each region and towns, chartered and component cities in each province on a blank map. 3. Identify the major access routes to major domestic destinations and name and describe major attractions in each province. 4. Compare the positive and negative impact of tourism in economic, cultural, environmental and social aspects. 5. Classify the major cities, natural wonders, historic sites, and other tourism attractions, both man-made and natural in the different regions and compare the different cultures of the regions with your home culture. Identify and explain key differences and their influence on travel.

PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS FOR THE COURSE For this course, the prerequisite subject is THC 111k Macro Perspective in Tourism and Hospitality. Aside from this, you are expected to possess the following skills: 1. Basic digital literacy skills required for studying such as being able to communicate through email, FB messenger and video call. These are especially for students with unstable or zero connectivity at home. If you have stable connectivity you should know the basic skills in downloading and uploading content material using Google Suite (Google docs, Google drive, Google sheets). You will need this as a basic tool when Philippine Tourism Geography and Culture

engaging with your teachers and groupmates. You also need to have basic skills in using Google Hangouts or Zoom as platforms to be used during real-time or synchronous sessions with your professor and classmates. To facilitate the use of these tools, it would be advisable for you to create your own gmail account. 2. Collaboration skills necessary for you to work with your classmates and groupmates for group activities or projects. 3. Communication skills, whether oral or written, which would help you to express clearly your ideas and thoughts to your group mates and your teacher whenever there are collaborative works or activities that you will undertake with them.

For our class schedule, kindly refer to the official matriculation form. The university classifies the subject into cluster 1 and cluster 2. Cluster 1 subjects will be taken in the first nine (9) weeks of the semester or from Aug 17 to Oct 22, 2020. While cluster 2 subjects will be taken in the last nine (9) weeks of the semester or from October 23, 2020 to January 12, 2021. This course- Philippine Tourism, Geography and Culture is to be taken as part of the first cluster subjects. You are expected to devote at least six hours a week for this subject. This means that you have to double the time specified in the matriculation form so that you will complete the learning activities and assessments as specified in the table above. For this printed modular class, we will have a synchronous session at least once a week at the time indicated in your matriculation form. The day of this synchronous session will be determined and announced on our first day of classes. This meeting will be conducted via zoom or google meet for those with internet connectivity or via call for those who do not have internet connectivity. Announcements will be posted in our class GC. Please tune in. Our interaction through synchronous sessions would be approximately 1 hour out of 6 hours required by the subject on a weekly basis. This means that in most parts of the required hours or approximately 5 hours a week, you are on self-study mode. During this time, you are expected to do your part as a diligent and responsible learner. Refer to this RED learning kit as a complete guide on how to acquire the competencies and comply with the course requirements. Though we have scheduled synchronous sessions, you can give me a ring or send a message in our class GC for urgent concerns. I will try to respond within the day or in 24 hours. Aside from our interaction and your interaction with the content, you are also encouraged to interact with your peers or classmates in this course. It intends to determine what your learning needs are and what interventions are needed to meet your learning needs and improve your competencies and skills. A summative assessment is an “assessment of learning”. It intends to measure whether you have already achieved the expected outcomes of the course. Final Grade= (Midterm + Final)/2 Cut-off for every assessment to be marked 75% is 50%. This means that for 10- item assessment, the student should get 5 correct answers to pass.

MODE OF DELIVERY, COMMUNICATION SYSTEM AND OTHER SUPPORT SYSTEM This RED Learning Kit is to be delivered on a printed modular modality. This is the modality that students may choose if they are facing either a zero internet connectivity at home, or an unstable internet connectivity. If you have chosen this modality, you are in self-study mode. You are expected to follow the study guide for this course. A minimum of 6 hours per week is required for you to work for this course or a total of 54 hours in 9 weeks. You are expected to submit the requirements required by the course.
