Description

Based on my nephew’s situation of no apparent sensation or control of his body from the waist down, it seems to suffer from paraplegia for him. Paraplegia is one type of paralysis, in which defined as the damage or injury in the full section of spinal cord that can result in loss of voluntary movement and sensations from waist, i.e. including both legs and hips ususally. There are three other types of paralysis: monoplegia (a single area of body, usually one limb), hemiplegia (upper and lower limbs on the same side with some or limited sensation and loss of motor ability), and quadriplegia/tetraplegia (paralysis below neck, all four limbs) (Spinal Cord, n.d.). Paraplegia is very likely for both lateral and anterior corticospinals, and spinothalamic tracts to be damaged for nephew’s situation. It is possible for him to stick with wheerchair for the rest of his life. However, I may comfort my brother that in reality, the level of paraplegia varies from person to person and even time to time. Even though paraplegia refers to substantial impairment in sensation, functioning and movement, it could not be an absolute permanent and total paralysis and it is posible for some people with paraplegia spontaneously recover (OpenStax, 2018) . Doctor will be going to do some imaging for him, like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) scanning, could localize the injury in order to know the much more detail for the damage. Just don’t be so pessimistic by now. To be honest, the rehabilitation is a long way to go. National Institutes of Health study (2014) found that spinal stimulation via giving electrical pulses can help with paraplegia regain voluntary movement, in which maybe able to resume at least some of the sensory pathway needed to be intact for the therapy to be effective. Also stem cell transplantation for spinal cord is a possible option of treatment for him as well (Fan et al. 2017). By now, we should wait for the doctor’s diagnosis and recommendation. We will give fully support to him.
