Description

Creating an Elevator Pitch An elevator pitch is key to successfully preparing for an internship, leadership position, or other career related pursuit. The short, thirty-second to two-minute speech is an important part of conveying your experience, skills, and goals to a potential employer or supervisor. Sharing your unique background in a concise, confident manner takes practice. It is never too early to become comfortable talking about yourself. Keep in mind these tips: 1. Make eye contact. Always address the individual by his or her proper name. Traditional rules of etiquette can have a major impact from the beginning. 2. Know your audience. Research their background and how it relates to you and your career goals. Doing your homework will boost your confidence. 3. Emphasize your key strength. Focus on those that will appeal to the particular audience/individual. 4. Tell Your Story. Consider including some of the following in your speech: a. What makes your background standout? What are your key strengths or positive qualities? b. Why are you interested in this company or, more generally, this industry? c. How can you help? What do you have to offer? d. How do you work efficiently to solve problems? 5. Practice! Practice your pitch with a friend, record yourself on the phone, or use Big Interview to make sure it flows like your normal speech. 6. Be prepared to answer follow-up questions your listener(s) may have. 7. Keep in touch. Provide the listener with contact information or ask for their information. Never underestimate the potential of networking. Starting off on the right foot will enhance your success. Although preparation is an important first step, the best way to guarantee an effective elevator speech is through practice and getting feedback. Use Big Interview to work on your elevator speech! I am looking for a position that will allow me to use my research and analysis skills. Over the past few years, I have strengthening these skills by working at a laboratory conducting research on diabetes and working alongside doctors, researchers, and medical students. Can you tell me how someone with my experience may fit into your organization?

Nice to meet you, I’m (first and last name). I’m currently a sophomore at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences studying public health. I hope to work in a public health clinic when I graduate. Through my student organization, I’ve had a couple of opportunities to present health information to elementary school students and at a nursing home. The position you have listed on your web site seems like a perfect fit for someone with my skills. Can you tell me more about what type of health outreach your organization does? Hi, my name is (first and last name) and I am a 4th year Doctor of Pharmacy student attending Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. My strongest skills are those I use in labs, and because I enjoy the laboratory setting, I am thinking of going into clinical research, perhaps in oncology. Can you help connect me with someone in your company with whom I could speak about an internship? Your elevator pitch outline: About you: Why are you interested in this position or company/industry?
