This video helps clarify models of communication by using pictures and visual examples of what happens when other people communicate. It also helps clarify what is happening in a conversation between two people. Majority of part of the human brain is devoted towards processing the visual information which makes the video extremely helpful. You retain 68 %of the information when stimulating the auditory and visual sense (watching video). We use four types of communication on a daily basis: verbal, non-verbal, written, and visual. It plays an important part in relationships, the workplace, school, and friendships. People communicate with each other in several ways by using facial expressions, gestures, pointing/using hands, writing, drawing, using equipment (such as text message or computer), touch, and eye contact. Effective communicators are paying close attention to this feedback as it is the only way to evaluate . whether the message was understood as intended and to correct any confusion
Ted Talk discusses one other topic on how to deal with miscommunication involving any kind of situation. One would do this by recognizing that passive hearing and active listening are not the same, listen with your eyes, ears, and gut, take time to understand as you try to be understood, finally be aware of your personal perceptual filters. Common causes of miscommunication are: assumptions, hasty communication, lack of under standing, and emails. We can avoid misunderstanding in communication by listening, observing, verifying, and evaluating. When communicating its important for both parties to give each other their full attention. Try asking yourself, am I focused on what the person is saying or what I am going to
say next?. In order to be a competent communicator the person has to have five characteristics: self awareness, person-centered messages, cognitive complexity, responsiveness and adaptability . along with ethics and civility
The transmission model of communication describes communication as a one-way, linear process in which a sender encodes a message and transmits it through a channel to a receiver who decodes it. While a transactional model of communication is the exchange of messages between sender and receiver where each take turns to send or receive messages. The transactional model is represented by a lump of clay during the ted talk. Instead of using a ball as an example they say that a speech is like throwing a lump of clay between two people. As it is thrown back and forth, the lump of clay is being shaped by each of the two people according to . their own interpretation...
