She viewed woman as powerful and used romance and melodramatic language to formulate and develop her stories. narrative techniques are used Allende avoided persecution by moving to Venezuela, politics is explored as a hidden theme. Allende mainly goes through social themes.

Key Protagonists writes and sells words to make money Newspapers are rare in her town which makes her fascinated when she see’s the man with the horse “Donde ella saciara su sed” Belisa is suffering, she’s hungry (theme of poverty) Newspaper discovery makes her realise shes better off selling words No prostitution or servant to the rich Gender roles are explored – explores the limited career choices for females back in the day. Theme of courage in women Belisa is presented through Allende’s point of view Belisa doesn’t let poverty break her down, she is strong.
