Results & Discussion Outline...
Cults and Therapy Research Paper Results I.
A 2 x 2 (treatment [therapy, control] x time [pre-test, post-test]) mixed analysis of variance will be conducted on mental health questionnaire results
II.
Hypothesis: Adult-second generation cult survivors exiting psychoanalytic therapy treatment will perform better on a mental health questionnaire after a twelve-week period
Discussion I.
It is hypothesized those who received psychoanalytic therapy will have improved mental health based on the scores of the mental health questionnaire at the end of a twelve-week therapy period
II.
Should these results be found: a. Would provide further evidence for the impact of psychoanalytic therapy on cult survivors and match similar results from similar previous studies (e.g., Goldberg, 2012) b. Would suggest psychoanalytic therapy should be used with all previous cult members upon exiting their cult
III.
Should these results NOT be found: a. May need to revisit other forms of therapy (e.g., Pignotti, 2000) b. May need to change variables (time between exiting cult and therapy)
IV.
Limitations
a. Small sample, variability in participants (backgrounds, ages, years since leaving cult, etc) V.
Future directions a. First-generation cult survivors, child survivors, potentially cult leaders, prisoners
of war (have been known to have forms of brainwashing & Stockholm Syndrome)...
