Description

Task#1 Wilsy Meyers D169 05/19/2021 A.1) Importance of a family’s expectations of education 2) Values pertaining to social or family groups 3) Experiences with individuals from diverse backgrounds 1. I grew up in a very low-income family. Also, none of my parents or grandparents went to high school. When my grandpa grew up, he bought several books to learn on his own. For this reason, my grandpa became my mentor. I remember he said to us (my siblings and I) that the best inheritance he could give to us was an education. My grandpa taught me the importance of education because I learned that it's never too late to start your education. It matters when anything earned surpasses all your limits in achieving your goals in education and life.

2. My children playing on sports teams taught me how to socialize with people with diverse backgrounds. I am from Panama and my first language is Spanish. When my kids were little, I had to take them to their sports. I was so shy to speak in English with the other kid’s parents. It was difficult for me at that time. Later, I went to college, and I started to communicate with everybody in English. In the gymnastic parent team, for example, there are many diverse backgrounds. All of us came from different countries so we have different values, cultures, and languages.

3. I was teaching a first-grade class a couple of weeks ago. There was a Russian student in

my class. We were talking about different cultures in the class. I told them that I came from Panama and fluently speak Spanish. I showed them my folklore tradition dance on the laptop and then displayed the Russian folklore dance to the class. The Russian student started crying with deep emotion because he said that none of his other teachers seemed interested in his culture (or others as well). After the video presentation, the Russian student started a speech in front of the class about his folklore dance tradition.

B.) Discuss each of the following based on the chosen case study 1) Discuss one characteristic of this student and how it affects learning 2) Discuss one environment or family factor that impacts this student’s life and how it affects learning 3) Discuss one-way utilizing equity pedagogy in the classroom can positively impact learning outcomes for this student 1) I was reading Ahmed's case, I noticed that he has Auditory Processing Disorder. This disability affects the ability to hear and understand speech. Ahmed may have limited sound and writing skills. He doesn't identify any parts of words, for example, rhymes, blends, syllables, etc. This disability may affect Ahmed’s processing to take longer, but if he receives help from the teacher, Operational, Speech therapists, and his family, he will have a better chance of succeeding academically and in life. 2) Ahmed's family speaks Arabic at home. I think this could be affecting learning for him. When someone has Auditory Processing Disorder, parents/family need to support the student(s) at home by speech therapies. In this case, Ahmed needs a lot of speech at home in English because more practice, the better his phonological processing will progress. 3) As Ahmed's teacher, I will utilize equity pedagogy in my classroom by doing a couple of projects about the cultural background with my class. For example, I will start with me: I will present my folklore-tradition dance, and I will explain in a 5 minute speech all about my Panama Folklore-dance. I will then tell Ahmed he needs to give a presentation about Syria. His speech will help Ahmed and other children with the same speech roadblocks as him to practice phonologic processing needs. I would hope Ahmed will be happy to share with us all his family's traditions, values and costumes. Equity pedagogy will positively impact my class because the class will have the experience of cooperative learning in how to use their parts of the words in a sentence....
