Educational Psychology and Human Development of Children and Adolescents D307 Task 2 A Personal Educational Philosophy A1. I identify with the humanistic learning theory. A2. The first way that the humanistic learning theory aligns with my views on teaching is that I want to foster connection and a sense of belonging in my classroom. Students are more successful when different abilities, backgrounds and cultures feel a sense of community within their classroom. Secondly, I want to encourage my students to develop a deeper appreciation for differences in the classroom as well as the whole school community. A3. The humanistic learning theory is supportive of understanding developmentally appropriate student needs in multiple ways. For example, in kindergarten, cognitively, students are developing language and using play time as exercise for fine motor and social development. The humanistic learning theory approach is beneficial to support kindergarten students because it establishes a sense of love and belonging for the student so they can be free to express themselves without judgement. Kindergarten can be an emotional adjustment for students because they are no longer with their primary care giver throughout the day. Creating a safe, welcoming environment allows the children to continue developing their cognitive and emotional skills. For students in nineth grade, the humanistic learning theory is crucial to their success in the formal operational stage. High school can be intimidating, and coming into freshman year, students should absolutely be

met with compassion and empathy, while establishing clear expectations of their responsibilities. A4. The humanistic learning theory can be used to address several developmental barriers. Specifically, the humanistic learning theory can be used to address socialemotional development barriers. Understanding how to best utilize the humanistic learning theory approach, can aid in how to help students who may appear shy or withdrawn. Providing students with a safe, welcoming environment and easing them into class discussion, can help these students adapt to change and build their confidence. Additionally, using the humanistic learning theory approach for students who may be experiencing low self-confidence, can assist with building confidence. The level of interaction a teacher has using the humanistic theory approach, can ease the anxiety a student may feel while working through their growth needs and transitioning the student into a growth mindset. A5. A humanistic approach to teaching means acknowledging diversity in well-being as well as social progress. Utilizing the humanistic approach for students of the LGBTQIA+ community can help these students develop and grow a sense of self-identity and maintain a voice. Students in the LGBTQIA+ community often feel alienated and lack the confidence to speak up and contribute to discussions. The humanistic approach is about accentuating emotional traits of students. If the student develops confidence and feels support from their teacher, they are more inclined to

actively participate and use their voice in classroom discussion rather than feel that they are not equal.
