DAMAGED CULTURE Summary Fallows wrote heart-rending facts about our country. Sad but true. We are stuck in a dismal situation resulting from the damaged culture brought about by Spanish colonizers and everyone that followed them. Analysis The Spaniards took away our heritage, identity and unique culture. Filipinos were treated as an inferior race. We were brainwashed that Americans and Europeans are the superior race. That is the reason why most Filipinas gets their hair colored to acquire "mestiza" looks and apply whitening creams to acquire white complexion. The Spaniards successfully damaged our culture like what they did with the Aztecs and other cultures they conquered. They successfully injected negative attitude in the fabric of our characters. Undesirable attitudes include mañana habit (procrastination), crab mentality, ningas- kugon (lack of perseverance), Filipino time (always late), balat-sibuyas (too sensitive), disregard for rules, colonial mentality, corruption, bahala na attitude, maintaining double standard, and excessive partying – celebrating like there's no tomorrow. These attitudes hamper the progress of our country. Is there hope for our motherland? Definitely yes! But we need a strong-willed leader who will spearhead the change in the society, the civil and religious organizations who will act as catalyst of change, and the home and school who will inculcate positive attitude to the young generation....
