CLASS OVERVIEW: Dance 45 highlights major themes in dance from the cross-cultural perspective of cultural mutuality and diversity, tradition, and the power of dance to bring about social change, activism and justice. The course investigates the following Chapter Themes and cultures: Chapter 1: The Power of Dance [Australia/Aborigine, Cambodia, Native American, Hawaii/Hula, Ballet] Chapter 2: Lord of the Dance [Religion & Dance: Christianity, Nigeria/Yoruba, India/Hinduism] Chapter 3: Dance of the Realm [Court Dance: French, Japanese, Ghana/Asante, Javanese] Chapter 4: Social Dance [Ballroom, Cook Islands, Morocco, Rock ‘n Roll, Social Change] Chapter 5: Classical Dance Theater [Japan/Kabuki, Ballet] Chapter 6: New Worlds, New Forms [Diaspora of Slavery Impacts Dance in North & South America] Chapter 7: Modernizing Dance [Russia, Germany, US, Civil Rights Movement, Dance & Social Justice] Chapter 8: Dancing in One World [US, Australia/Aborigine, South Africa, Belgium, France, Black Lives Matter, Dance & Social Justice] CLASS STRUCTURE-Posted three times a week on GauchoSpace: Lectures: Daily lectures are divided into small individual lectures to expedite downloading. The time necessary for viewing each is noted for you. Power points are used to visually guide you through the material. The power points, my brief talks and short paragraphs I post all serve as your study guide to review material. Video Links: On each day, you will have several video links to view. Many will come from the Dance in Video Online Database through the UCSB library. They have transcripts. I apologize for all their misspellings. Others are from Youtube. The time necessary for viewing each is noted for you.

Required Readings - Textbook and Additional Readings: Our textbook, Dancing: The Pleasure, Power and Art of Movement by Gerald Jonas is available in the United States through our campus bookstore to purchase or rent. They offer free UPS Ground Shipping. Additionally the text is available electronically, in the United States and internationally, through UCSB Library Course Reserves and the HathiTrust. Links to purchase/rent and for all electronic access are on our Gauchospace page. Additional readings are required, and posted directly on the relevant day on our GauchoSpace page. EXAMS: You have four multiple-choice exams online, each with 35 questions and worth 25% of your grade. A synchronous zoom Review Session is held the Thursday before each exam at 4pm, recorded and then posted on Gauchospace by noon on Friday. Exams are open to your book, notes, available class materials, and are accessible for 24 hours to accommodate students in different time zones. Once you begin your exam, you will have 50 minutes to complete. Exam 1 covers Preface/Chapter 1-2, opens Sunday, April 11 at 5pm and closes Monday, April 12 at 5pm. Exam 2 covers Chapter 3-4, opens Sunday, April 25 at 5pm and closes Monday, April 26 at 5pm. Exam 3 covers Chapter 5-6, opens Sunday, May 16 at 5pm and closes Monday, May 17 at 5pm. Exam 4 covers Chapter 7-8, opens Sunday, June 6 at 5pm and closes Monday, June 7 at 5pm. *ALL TIMES ARE CALIFORNIA/PACIFIC STANDARD TIME (PST)* NO EXTRA CREDIT IS AVAILABLE & FINAL GRADES ARE FINAL Regarding copyrighted course materials: My lectures and course materials, including PowerPoint presentations, tests, outlines, and similar materials, are protected by U.S. copyright law and by University policy.
