David Montanari Pre-Simulation Questions

1. What are three nursing interventions for a post-operative patient? Three nursing interventions for a post-operative patient include pain assessment, performing skin assessments and repositioning to prevent skin breakdown, and by encouraging the patient to use an incentive spirometer. 2. What patient findings might you notice for a patient with immobility issues? Some findings that may be noticed in a patient with immobility issues include skin breakdown, weight loss, hypotension, and depression or feelings of hopelessness. 3. Describe complications that can occur as a result of immobility for all body systems. All body systems are affected by immobility. Metabolic changes will alter the endocrine system and affect resorption. Two complications that could occur as a result of immobility on the respiratory system include severe respiratory complications that include “pulmonary atelectasis (collapse of alveoli) and hypostatic pneumonia (inflammation of the lung from stasis or pooling of secretions)” (Potter et al., 2021). One major potential cardiac complication includes the development of a thrombus that could settle deep within the lower extremities; if dislodged, it could result in a pulmonary embolism. Musculoskeletal changes include joint contractures, muscle mass loss, and osteoporosis. Immobility could modify the elimination of urine, which could result in the formation of kidney stones. Lastly, immobility could cause impaired tissue integrity if the patient isn’t repositioned every two hours.
