Day 2 summary of Unknown White Compound Lab Kate Johnson Dillon Wong Mercedes Erpelding

In the experiment the results for various chemical and physical properties tests were compared for the unknown and Na2SO4 compounds. Na2SO4 is the compound which is hypothesized to be the unknown. The experiments that were performed were ion tests, flame test, and conductivity test. In the ion test, solutions of both Na2SO4 and the unknown were mixed with .1M AgNO3, .6M HCl, and .1M BaCl2 solutions. The purpose of this test was to see if a reaction occurred in any of the reaction combinations. The results of the test showed a similarity between the unknown and Na2SO4. When AgNo3 was put with both the unknown and Na2SO4 separately the same results occurred, a slight precipitate was formed. When HCl was combined with both the unknown and Na2SO4 separately no reaction occurred. The results seemed odd but when information was searched on the internet it was concluded from previous experiments that the same results occurred because HSO4 is a higher acid than HCl so it was replaced. Finally, BaCl2 was combined with both the Na2SO4 and unknown separately the most noticeable reaction occurred. A white precipitate formed. For the flame test, solutions of Na2SO4 and the unknown white compound were used to dip the nichrome wire and observe what color was produced varying on the Na2SO4 solution and the unknown white compound solution. The purpose of this test was to determine if both solutions produced the same color when put into the flame. In carrying out the experiment, it was found that both solutions of the compounds produced the same flame color. This, along with ion and conductivity tests, reinforced the assumption that Na2SO4 and the unknown white compound are the same compound. For the conductivity experiment, the conductivity probe and logger pro were used. In setting up logger pro, a graph was made that compared conductivity and time(in seconds). After making three different solutions, a solution of Na2SO4, KCl, and the unknown white compound. Using these solutions and holding the probe fully submerged in the solutions, the conductivity was graphed using logger pro. Using the stats button on logger pro, the mean conductivity was found for each solution. Then, each mean conductivity was compared. The findings were conclusive with the other experiments conducted during lab. The conductivity of the unknown compound was very similar to the conductivity of Na2 SO4 where the conductivity of the KCl was a notable amount different than the other two solutions....
