Lab Summary Form -Spring ‘21 ●

Use this form to write notes in as you do the Labster Simulations or read scientific articles. Make a print copy before beginning a Labster Simulation because they only work in Full Screen mode. Once the simulation/reading is completed, and your notes have been cleaned up to be concise and clearly written, then submit your Lab Summary using this same form to your Blackboard section Assignment Box by 5PM the Sunday following lab. A .pdf of a scanned hand-written Lab Summary Form is acceptable if neatly written, or revised and edited notes typed in this same Lab Summary Form can be submitted.

Lab/Research Article Title: Identification of Unknown Bacteria: Help save baby Kuppelfangs from an epidemic! Source & Date published (or Labster Lab): March 4th, 2021

Question (Grey fill =topics to keep notes WHILE doing simulation)

Lab Summary Notes

Points earned

Baby Kuppelfangs from an alien planet has been infected with an unknown bacteria from Earth. In this stimulation, we are able to run a Q1: Overall simulation/Exper series of tests that will help us identify exactly what that bacteria is that iment described has infected the baby Kuppelfangs in order to prevent an epidemic. in 4 sentences or less /2 pt

Q2: Primary Research Question asked ?

Q3: Primary Question written as a hypothesis and tested in the experiment

What is the bacteria that has infected the baby Kuppelfangs and what tests should be conducted to help us identify that bacteria and prevent an epidemic? /2 pt

If we perform a series of tests of differential culture media and biochemical tests, then we will be able to identify the bacteria that has infected the Kuppelfangs because they can harm the environment and start an epidemic.

/1 pt

1- Take samples from sick baby kuppelfang Q4: List MAIN methods in order 2- preparing an agar plate for differential media performed (Or describe if name 3- Staining the bacteria samples unknown) 4- Culturing bacteria samples

/1 pt

5-performing and combining biochemical tests (catalase, oxidase, indole tests)

Q5: State purpose of each Method above OR what was measured/acco mplished by test

1-the purpose of taking a sample from the sick baby kuppelfangs is to identify what bacteria has infected them 2- preparing agar for differential media will allow us to grow colonies of bacteria in order to differentiate the differences between different bacteria 3- the purpose of staining the bacteria samples allows us to distinguish how the bacteria look like as their colors will be enhanced 4- Culturing the bacteria samples will allow us to control the growth of singular bacteria colonies in order to run tests on these samples

/4 pt

5- Performing the biochemical tests will allow us to find out the characteristics of the sample bacteria in order to identify exactly what type of bacteria the sample is

Q6: Statement as to whether data supported hypothesis or not, and reasoning for statement is clear

Q7: Final conclusion is stated clearly and concisely

The data collected supported the hypothesis as we were able to exactly identify what type of bacteria has infected the baby Kuppelfangs allowing to prevent an epidemic and also save the environment and the ecosystem that the Kuppelfangs live on.

/2 pt

Through a series of techniques of differential culture media, biochemical tests, and more, we are able to identify and interpret bacteria from a bacterial sample in order to save the baby Kuppelfangs and stop an epidemic with our human bacteria that we have identified.

/1 pt

Performing this stimulation has made me wonder whether or not this experiment has taken place in order to stop an epidemic in another Q8: Interesting research as animal species that are not humans. I believe it would be interesting if I follow-up, or new could ever partake in these series of experiments that could help stop an questions to epidemic and learn how to identify different types of bacteria. ask? Reason why given? 1/pt
