` Deaf in America: Voices from a Culture By: Carol Padden and Tom Humphries Chapter One Summary There are several different things that stood out to me while I was reading this chapter. As an overview, though, this chapter caused me to realize some things that I had never realized before. For example, I never really thought about how shocking it would be to find out that, if you were deaf, there are people that are not like you. I thought that it was interesting how, when we are children, we see the world as the way we were raised to see it. I never thought about the fact that there were even people who were not able to hear. I guess you could say that, in a way, I had just assumed that everyone could hear because I could hear. I would have honestly been shocked and confused to find out that not everyone can hear, as a child. I would not know how to take or process that information. Knowing that would have probably turned my world upside down....
