Description

Debate Prep Sheet: Should high school start times be pushed back? Answer the following items completely. The more thorough you are today the better you will be in the debate tomorrow. Remember, you don’t know which “side” you will have to argue for; so be totally prepared for both! Make sure your arguments are supported with evidence. Use psychological terminology wherever possible. Use your textbook as a resource, too! Be sure to include where your evidence is coming from. (According to…) 1. Write three (3) arguments (with evidence to support your claims) for why high school start times should be pushed back. -

Everyone has to get up earlier, so by being later, it gives students the time to fully wake up and prepare for the day. This can result in academic success and better grades. Pushing start times back would help with students mental health. By pushing back start times, it can help students receive more sleep which could benefit students suffereing with anxiety, depression, obesity and more according to the Robert Wood Johnson foundation. (https://www.rwjf.org/en/blog/2018/02/three-reasons-to-consider-later-school-start-times.html) By pushing school start times back, this can reduce drowsy driving. We talked about this In class vaguely but is still a huge concern. Many teens each year alone are a result of car crashes across the nation but add a factor of not being fully awake is truly scary. Pushing back the start time would allow students to fully wake up and be able to drive safely and get to the desired destination.

2. Look back at the arguments you made for #1. What counter-arguments do you think the other side may come up with to “beat” you? Create three (3) rebuttals. AKA – why their argument isn’t good. -

This statement is not entirely true. Many student do receive good grades as they do wake up early for school. Not all students are the same and its not good to generalize the students as the same person. Many students suffer with these problems that are not sleep deprivation related. Yes, sleep can be an attribute to how it can worsen but again, it is not safe to say that all students who suffer with such problems are sleep related. Many car crashes caused by teens are not a majority caused by drowsiness. It is another factor that could lead to an accident, but it does not hhave enough information to completely justify the statement

3. Write three (3) arguments (with evidence to support your claims) for why high school start times should NOT be pushed back. - The after school activites can play a role in the amount of homework that can be done each night. If students participate in after school activities and school start time was pushed which would result in school end times being done later. Homework for studn4ets would become more difficult to complete in the time given. - Not all students are able to drive to school everyday and parents who work would not be able to drive their kid to work in the morning. This can affect students being able to get to school on time and the parents also being able to get to work on time.

- Along with school times ending earlier, this could affect some older siblings as they take care of their younger siblings. Many students parents have to work later in the day so they have ti be responsible. So later start tines could impose a possible conflict. 4. Look back at the arguments you made for #3. What counter-arguments do you think the other side may come up with to “beat” you? Create three (3) rebuttals. AKA – why their argument isn’t good. -Teachers could not give as much homework or even afterschool activities could also be very brief and not lat awhile. -Students could also take the bus instead of having their parents drive them into school, putting their jobs at risk. -Parents could just hire a nanny or even some students may not hhave younger siblings so this may not even be a problem for some. 5. Write down at least two (2) personal insights you have on this topic – can be based on your sleep-log. - Definietly getting into a routine sleep can help with sleep deprivation and being tired. Regardless of late or early school starts, getting into a routine can make things better. - starting later may not be ideal for many people even considering most people at villa participate in after school activities so getting home later with our heavy amounts of school work.

Rubuttle for side A  Opening up at later time would help them get the recommended amount of sleep per night  Concentration level is better in the afternoon, would not learn as well in morning  Not disrupting the bodys natural rthhymn...
