2 Declaration of Professional Practices and Procedures for Behavior Analysts A Declaration of Professional Practices and Procedures is of utmost importance as it is the framework for how a professional relationship will be conducted between a behavioral analyst and the client as well as the client’s parents/guardians. The declaration covers the expectations of the client, behavior analyst and the parents/guardians through thorough documentation. According to Bailey & Burch (2016), a declaration is used for the parents/guardian to obtain information about the behavior analyst, such as their credentials, work history and educational history (Bailey & Burch, 2016). The declaration also discusses the billing and fees for Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services rendered, as well as the code of conduct that the behavior analyst must abide by. If a Declaration of Professional Practice and Procedures is not provided it leaves the parent/guardian open to interpretation about what things are allowed and what is not allowed. Some of the misconceptions that are assumed can include the rules regarding gift giving which can also include food, beverages, and even money like tips. When there are no boundaries or codes of conduct it can result in issues between the behavior analyst and the parents/guardians of the client. A Declaration of Professional Practices and Procedures should be presented upon initial meeting with parent/guardians of potential clients to allow them to make an informed decision on who they will be working with to implement ABA services for their child. In addition, this document can also be presented to a school system or any individual or corporation that deals with the implementation of ABA practices. A Declaration of Professional Practices and Procedures is created to protect the behavior analyst as well as to uphold and implement ethical practices and responsibilities that must be followed in order to fully represent the profession and purpose of Applied Behavior Analysis

3 Declaration of Professional Practices and Procedures for Behavior Analysts (ABA). The BACB (2019) Ethical Compliance Code 6.0: Behavior Analysts’ Ethical Responsibility to the Profession of Behavior Analysis states that the “behavior analyst have an obligation to the science of behavior and profession of behavior analysis”, and code 7.0 Behavior Analysts’ Ethical Responsibility to Colleagues which states “behavior analyst work with colleagues within the profession of behavior analysis and from other professions and must be aware of these ethical obligations in all situations.” Both codes are upheld in the declaration by making sure that the behavior analyst is promoting the values of ABA and providing correct and useful information to the public and all those being assisted. The behavior analyst also is making it clear by putting the client’s needs first and guaranteeing that the client is kept out of harm and that their legal rights are being considered and protected. A Declaration of Professional Practices and Procedures in relation to ethical responsibilities is also used to provide parents/guardians peace of mind when concerning their child and the type of services they will be receiving. The BACB (2019) Ethical Compliance Code 2.0 Behavior Analysts’ Responsibility to Clients touches base on all of the expectations that a behavior analyst must abide by to be ethically competent, which includes the rights and prerogatives of the client (2.05), maintaining confidentiality (2.06), treatment/intervention efficacy (2.09), and contracts, fees, and financial agreements (2.12) amongst many others that are discussed in the declaration, and discussed with parents/guardians before starting treatment/intervention. All in all, a Declaration of Professional Practices and Procedures is an essential document that takes into account the welfare, support and expectations of the parties involved while also making sure that both parties are understanding of what it entails.
