Critical Thinking & Critical Thinking Barriers...

Description

1. Defining Critical Thinking Critical thinking is the process of our brain in analyzing and deciding about an issue coming from all the information that are provided and compare it to every other possible solution that can solve the problem. We all use critical thinking skills in our daily lives. I often use my critical thinking skills while working. I work as a shuttle driver and I use my critical thinking skills while driving. In my daily life at work, I deal with traffic all the time. I use my critical thinking skills in deciding whether should I take the longer route or the shorter route to avoid the traffic. I also use my critical thinking skills when I deal with people in the society. We all know that not all people in the society are the same. Some people are nice, some are rude and many more. I use my critical thinking skills by thinking about myself on how should I deal with these different attitudes of people. Whether should I just ignore them or be nice to them, each and every action I make depends on the attitude I get from the people surrounding me. External Source: http://www.criticalthinking.org/pages/our-concept-of-critical-thinking/411 Critical thinking is that mode of thinking — about any subject, content, or problem — in which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by skillfully analyzing, assessing, and reconstructing it. Critical thinking is self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking. It presupposes assent to rigorous standards of excellence and mindful command of their use\ The definition from the external source basically means the same thing on what I believe in terms of defining critical thinking. It’s all about making decisions in life based on the facts.

2. Barriers to Critical Thinking Peer Pressure – I have experienced and committed this critical thinking barrier because of hanging out too much with my peers that it came to the time that I always do what they told me to. It’s also because I believe it’s how we should do things in life. I got into a fight during my high school days because of my friends. They all encouraged me to get involved with the fight even though I know it in myself that I shouldn’t get involve in those kinds of stuff but I still let myself get involved.

I wish to improve Rationalization (making excuses) barrier of critical thinking skills because I know in myself that I always try to avoid knowing the truth by making excuses because I believe that there are things in life that we should not know to avoid hurting ourselves. I believe in the saying that “What you don’t know won’t hurt you” and yes, I know it’s wrong that is why I want to improve myself in handling this barrier of critical thinking.

3. Interview I recently had an argument with my co-worker because she fell under the Stereotyping barrier of critical thinking. I disagreed with all of her opinions about the certain race we were talking about. She was criticizing all the difference that she had with her native tradition compare to the other people’s

tradition. I argued with her about knowing how to respect because not all people are born the same way and it’s not our fault. I told her that we should just respect each other’s tradition to be able to have a more peaceful life....
