Barriers to Critical Thinking Being able to have great critical thinking skills requires discipline. Critical thinking skills is not something you develop from one day to another. Critical thinking takes plenty of practice and patience. Many barriers can affect new college students from developing critical thinking skills efficiently and productively. I have difficulty dealing with barriers myself. One of my barriers is stress. I stress out when I think critically because, even though, my assessment results estate I am a level five thinker I feel otherwise. I stress about not being good enough at critical thinking, I feel that critical thinking is of substance for college students. I am frightened that my level of critical thinking will never improve because I don’t have the time to actually put my critical thinking skills at practice all the time like I should. I only have time to practice my critical thinking skills at work. I mostly stress about not meeting time lines or due dates. I stress about every single thing out there. At the end, I ask myself? Is it really worth it to stress this much about something so small? A technique that works for me when I am over stressed is taking a warm bubble bath, going for a walk, or just sitting down outside breathing fresh air. I am able to return to my assignment with a clearer head. Before starting school, about five weeks ago, I was working out one full hour for five days a week. And let me tell you, it worked miracles. I was calm, and stress free. Moving on to my second critical thinking barrier, which is emotional influences, when it comes to certain subjects like abortion, family violence, discrimination against Latinos, discrimination against children with special needs, I tend to get emotional, it either can turn into a big debate or it can turn out to me excusing myself out of the room. I try to avoid all the subjects with these matters. I get very passionate about it. Recently I learned about not taking things too personal and not being such a serious person about everything.

Conclusion Properly developing critical thinking skills is something worth taking the time to learn. Critical thinking skills are not only necessary for college but for everyday life situations. I will continue to improve my stress management skills and my emotional views when having discussions.
