How You Can Overcome the Barrier

Example barrier to critical thinking: Cognitive dissonance

Example from your life: I have an opportunity for promotion and raise in salary at work, but the job requires more time commitment so I would be unable to continue my education right now.

Example strategy for overcoming the barrier: I can overcome my cognitive dissonance by comparing short- and long-term advantages and disadvantages. I am going to school to improve my career opportunities and earn more money for my family; the promotion would give me more money now but going to school improves my career prospects longterm. While this promotion does not require a college degree, future promotions would, so I would decide to decline the promotion and continue my college education.

Resistance

I was approached by someone with a different political view than I had. When hearing their thoughts on a certain matter, I proceeded with my thoughts and argued why they were wrong.

I can overcome this barrier by being more impartial to others’ opinions. Also, instead of arguing and saying someone is wrong, I can try explaining my side and thoughts and try to see where maybe we both meet in the middle somewhere. I can try to be more thoughtful of others opinions and feelings.

Rationalization

I have chosen a favorite when voting before based on who the person was that created the item.

I chose based on a biased opinion, I can fix this by evaluating all options and choosing based upon quality or presentability rather than favoritism. Being more observant and less biased will ensure a fair voting process.

Denial

I deny when I do not know something, I go with whatever is said or done, and investigate it later to learn what I did not know.

I can try to speak up when I don’t know something. I can ask someone instead of acting like I know and maybe ill learn something a bit differently than a plain google search.

How You Can Overcome the Barrier

Stress

I constantly stress over every little thing in my life. I have a constant stress and anxiety about me.

I can try to overcome this by relieving some stress. I can try to not overthink something or let it go. More than likely this is a barrier I will not overcome because it’s life long and even therapy cannot help me.

Avoidance

I avoid people. I avoid confrontation. I try to stay to myself in my own little world.

I may be able to learn something from others if I were a bit more inviting. I would be able to have more conversations and less avoidance of conversing with people. This will help me push more and become more confident, thus helping me form into a more critical thinker.

Distractions

I am constantly distracted all day long. I have a very busy life and my kids and my life in general distract me from most things I must get done in a timely manner.

I can set time away for myself. I can push myself to get something done without stopping due to a distraction. I can ask for help so someone can watch my kids while I get stuff done.
