Critical Thinking: Identifying Barriers Worksheet Review the definition of critical thinking, the barriers to critical thinking, and the 3 stages of cognitive development in college students in Ch. 1 of THiNK: Critical Thinking and Logic Skills for Everyday Life before you respond. Write a 75- to 125-word response to each of the following prompts: 1. What is the role of critical thinking in your daily life? Consider your personal, professional, and school life in your response. Review the definition of critical thinking in Ch. 1 of THiNK: Critical Thinking and Logic Skills for Everyday Life. Critical thinking role in everyday is something that is done unknowingly, since it is thinking through a problem and coming up with an effective solution. In personal life critical thinking is used when making a decision whether big or small and figuring ways to solve possible circumstances. In professional life critical thinking is used to troubleshoot any problems that arise although it is the same thing everyday problems still arise. In school I currently use critical thinking to find the time in order to get work done. 2. Provide an example of a situation in your life in which critical thinking could be used. Why would critical thinking be helpful in that situation? In my work life I am a flu vaccine technician and I am responsible for ensuring that the right amount of live virus is injected into eggs to cultivate. There is a range that the volume most be in order to receive the acceptable yield. If the volume falls out of range then it’s my responsibility to discover why there is a problem, it may be trouble the time it takes to inject, finding if there is a leak in the line, and finding if the line is crimped. So, thinking through the problem to find a solution is critical thinking. 3. Identify 3 to 4 barriers to critical thinking that you can relate to. Describe the barriers in your own words. Provide an example of a situation where you have, or might in the future, encounter each barrier. Note: You do not need to describe how you can overcome the barriers you identified. You will have that opportunity in a future assignment. Focus on the barriers to critical thinking and examples that are meaningful to you. Three types of barriers that are often faces are avoidance, anger, and denial. Avoidance is when people are so strong about their own opinion they avoid the opinions of others. Anger is how people respond to others point of view if they don’t agree with it, allowing their emotions to show rather than being reasonable. Finally is denial, it is when presented with facts people will deny the truth even with the facts are presented. 4. Which of the 3 stages of cognitive development (dualism, relativism, commitment) are you at? Explain why you placed yourself in this stage of development. How might you move to the next stage if you are at stage 1 or 2, or how you might maintain stage 3? I currently believe that I am at stage three of the process which is commitment. I have made the decision that I know what I want to achieve and are taking the steps to be successful. So therefore I am committed to my success as long as I stay on this path then I can prevent myself from moving backwards into a previous step. Over time as I move on in my career then I may face the previous steps in a different
