Summary

This is a group activity that is quite useful for groups to brainstorm and see how your group would handle it when different individuals have differing opinions....

Description

Desert Survival It is approximately 10am in mid-January and you have just crash landed in the Sahara Desert. The plane has completely burnt out, only the frame remains. Miraculously, your group survived the crash but the pilot has been killed. No survivors could determine the actual bearings before the crash. However, ground sightings taken shortly before the crash suggest that you are about 100 miles off the course filed in your flight plan. A few moments before the crash, the pilot indicated you were about 70 miles North-east of a mining camp. The camp is the nearest known settlement. Before the plane caught fire, your team was able to save the 10 items on the plane. Your task is to rank them according to their importance to your survival in the desert. In pairs, rank the items starting with 1 for the most important, down to 10 for the least important. Be prepared to justify your decisions!

ITEM Torch Pen Knife Plastic Raincoat (large size) Bandage Kit with Gauze .45 Calibre Pistol (loaded) Parachute (white and red) 1 litre of water per person 1 Pair of Sunglasses per Person 1 Coat per Person Cosmetic Mirror

RANKING OF IMPORTANCE

Goal of the game: The goal of this activity is to encourage creative thinking and decision making.

Debrief questions: 1. Ask the students to explain why they chose the items they picked, and how it plays to their strengths.

2. Were there any instances of social loafing? Are you succumb to group think? 3. Communication: How did you convinced your team members to go with your decision?

4. Communication: How did you and your team come up with a common consensus on the ranking of the items?...
