Description

#37620 5428 Develop and community sector service program Name of program: Never Stop Learning Aim: The aim of the program is to encourage Seniors and Youth Companionship in a supportive and enlightening environment. Seniors who are experiencing isolation/loneliness and need to engage in services/workshops with Youth also facing similar issues. Program will run 3 days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday) and will have one Workshop weekly (Wednesday). Target Group: Seniors (65+) who are retired, isolated and lonely. This could include seniors who live independently, in nursing homes or who have little/no contact with family or their own communities (i.e. CALD seniors from different countries). Youth/Young Adults (15-20) who are bored, don’t attend school/work, having own (low risk) issues who need some type of community engagement. We have chosen this age range because this program would benefit Youth who are more mature and motivated to get the most of this experience. Background: Two communities that do not have a lot of support or suffer from issues are the Youth and Seniors. The program came about due to the rising numbers of elderly seniors who experience isolation/loneliness and need community engagement. Youth also need community engagement and what better way then connecting with seniors full of life experience/wisdom. This will benefit both communities as it will be a safe environment to share their knowledge, skills, stories, passion and time. The youth apart of this program would need to be low risk or dealing with low risk/non-threatening issues, only so it is an easy and positive experience for both target groups. Other Partners and Stakeholders: *Target group: Seniors (65+) and Youth/Young Adults (15-20) experiencing (or at risk of) isolation and loneliness. *Target group support systems: family members, caregivers and friends *Service provider (service I am operating from) *Community: Schools that Youth may attend, retirement homes/villages that the seniors may live in Timeframe: June 1st – December 1st (Approx. 6 months) *Key Milestones, i.e. first official day or program, trip days (once every month) to destinations such as the movies, bowling, picnics at the park etc., Last and final day of program (where there will be a big lunch with certificates and gifts for appreciation and effort) *Dates: when we start advertising this program, first day we operate, when we finish this program, *Responsible staff: dates of staff training sessions, recruiting staff/finding staff to be a part of this program, staff that go out and ‘spread the word’ of the service, appropriate supervisors and management to support team members. Volunteers will also be welcome to engage in the program (responsibilities could be helping set up activities, admin work etc.) Rationale: This program is going to achieve this aim because other than targeting issues with isolation and loneliness amongst the two target groups, there will also be offered support and encouragement in areas such as: bringing a sense of belonging/purpose, creativity, learning, social interaction and relationship building.

Specific objectives – Use SMART format for each action *Run 1 workshop a week (Workshop Wednesday’s!) / Projects Non-Workshop days (Tuesday & Thursday) are more casual days that are filled with easy-going activities shared between everyone. Activities on these days can include brunch, morning tea, puzzles, board-games, listening to different genres of music etc. Non-Workshop days will be more of a social gathering between participants in a more relaxed, friendly environment where there are no teachers/presenters/speakers or set agenda for the day (whereas Workshop Wednesdays have agenda’s/plan for the day, scheduled activities etc.) S = Find/allocate resources needed (stationary, paper, pens etc.) as well as teachers/speakers/facilitators to lead workshops/projects. The workshops are designed long term where participants can go back and finish or create new projects (i.e. gardening new vegetables/flowers every month). M = Surveys, weekly meetings as a group or one on one with participants to gain feedback, include a variety of workshops for all participants to enjoy A = Sticking to budgets and funding, using resources already available (i.e. computers), workshops are appropriate, respectful and enjoyable for all R = Following Policies and Procedures, adjust plans/agenda’s where necessary, respond to challenges appropriately and within control T = Sticking to Wednesdays, Workshops to run for 3 hours, always bringing in new workshop ideas/themes to keep interest *Trip days once a month (6 trips in total) to recreational destinations. Trip locations/events will be: Trips have been designed to enhance participants experience within the program where they will get education, recreational fun/pleasure and even learning/observations. Trips have also been designed to be inclusive, gentle activities - taking into consideration seniors who have limited mobility. S = Trip locations will be: Picnic at the Australian Botanic Garden (Mt Annan location), Bowling, Trip to the Sydney Tramway Museum, Indoor mini golf, Indoor courts for badminton/light tennis and Bingo. Also include equipment needed/name badges (if any), enough staff to support etc. M = Participants are excited for trips, if applicable have permission from caregivers/families to attend, trips where enjoyable and ran on time, gain feedback from participants A = Provide transport, mini/courtesy bus, both target groups may be able to use pension/youth cards for discounts (need to call ahead to discuss with location) R = Consider limitations (mobility in Seniors) that may affect ability to participate T = One a month (Tuesdays, gives participants and staff a chance to talk about the experience the next day), staying within program timetable (approx. 5 hours from 10am-2pm, including travel time) *Monthly meetings that will share ideas and progress within the program between staff and participants. These meetings will also include small presentations where staff can give out certificates of appreciation to achieving and motivated individuals who are getting the most from their experience. S = Meetings on Thursday’s (last day of the week in the program) to evaluate the past week in a shared environment, include praise and achievements, discuss

#37620 5428 following weeks ahead (i.e. Trips/Days out coming up, important dates, birthday celebrations) M = Participants feel a sense of accomplishment & proud of their projects when receiving certificates of appreciation, meetings are successful by being inclusive, have a set agenda and a positive experience A = Posters and word of mouth to remind everyone of meeting, provide tea/coffee for comfort, go extra mile by including gift certificates if appropriate R = Staff monitor participants, certificates are equal/non-bias, all participants are to get praised regardless throughout curse of program T = No set time-frame for meeting length (aiming for at least an hour), Meetings continue until conclusion of program Outcomes: We hope to inspire Youth to get more involved in the community and utilize their new knowledge and skills learnt from the seniors. Another positive outcome relating to the Youth target group is that they continue to live positive lives whilst making productive and optimistic decisions. One of the biggest aims this program hopes to achieve is a sense of purpose and belonging for the Seniors who may not have family/contact or a support system. We hope to decrease risks of mental and physical health issues that can stem from isolation and loneliness as well as build social interaction that can encourage abilities in confidence, friendship skills and learning new things. Lastly, we hope to achieve strong, long lasting friendships/connections between the Youth & Seniors and all other stakeholders. Measuring outcomes will include the monthly meetings mentioned above in ‘specific objectives’, Weekly conversations with participants to get their valued input on their experiences/thoughts and feelings with the program, collected surveys (from participants) from the start and end of the program to measure the success of the program as a whole and continuously work on improvement where necessary/required. Perceived barriers: *Communication barriers between Seniors and Youth *Communication barriers between Participants and Staff *Accessibility to program (i.e. is the location of the program accessible by public transport, does it have wheelchair ramps or a lot of stairs?) *Unwillingness from the community/target groups to participate or continue attending the program *Lack of knowledge/awareness of the program *Weather on Days Out/Trips (i.e. Picnic at the Australian Botanic Garden – it could rain etc) *Room/s that have been booked unavailable, booked by other programs or previous programs running late Program strategies: *Staff that are trained in facilitating the workshops and who have the skills and experience to support and work with these target groups *Obtain funding *Seeking donations for craft activates (i.e. cards, board games, books etc.) *Collaborate with community event Supervisors/Managers/Organisers for Trips/Days out for approval or agenda on day. Also checking organisations Policies and Procedures for Days Out/Trips *Analyse how we break barriers above ‘Perceived barriers’

#37620 5428 *Guest teachers/speakers (can include Community Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island elders, Uni/TAFE Art/Dance teachers, University Fashion/Arts students, librarians) to come in and support/guide/encourage workshop activities. Workshops do not always need to be presented by teachers/members of the community, staff can also facilitate workshops if they have particular relatable hobbies/passions/interests. *Engage with other services: They can support our program by keeping our posters/pamphlets on display. Networking with these services could bring further opportunities of collaboration, fundraising, donations etc. Communication strategies: *Emailing expressions of interest to nursing homes/retirement villages/lawn bowling clubs/RSL *Posters available/accessible at: shopping center notice boards, Centrelink Centre, library notices, asking other services (Doctor’s, Restaurants etc.) to display our posters/pamphlets, parks, shopping centers, *Consulting with community leaders/local MP’s to spread awareness on our program *Advertisement at schools/alternate education providers to spread awareness/posters for Youth/Young Adults. This could also be presentations in class or school assembly. *Social media: powerful tool to engage with Youth/Young Adults who are techsavvy Staff Training: Training on facilitating workshops (workshops don’t need to be professional as staff are more than welcome to facilitate workshops based on their own relevant hobbies, interest’s and passions. WHS training, induction of workplace, signing in & out procedures for visitors/participants, Policy and procedure training (for new staff not from the Catholic Care Organisation, NDIS knowledge and experience as well as WWCC, National Police Check, Drivers license (if applicable). Resources: Organisation (Catholic care) support, allocated space/room big enough for both staff and participants, transport for Trips/Days out, equipment for workshops as well as teachers/staff to facilitate Workshops, confirmation of Trips as well as checking ahead if Youth & Senior/Pension cards can be used for discounts, funds for program, other back up conference rooms incase allocated program room is already in use/running late etc., Bruch/Coffee/Tea for Thursday group meetings Funding/Budget: *Donations for workshop activities (board-games, cards, books etc.) as well as resources CatholicCare already provides (conference room, chairs, computers, kitchen for morning tea/coffee) *Write and develop Program proposal (This Design) to present to Management to request funds (detailing what the program involves, resources needed, time frame, target groups, staff etc.) *Cost’s for workshops activities if needed as well as cost’s for Trips/Days out Fit to organization: This program meets the CatholicCare “We seek a society in which everyone is valued and supported” Vision as we aim to include and support two different groups (Seniors & Youth) in the community but are facing similar issues. The Mission statement also points out “connecting communities” which is a big influence for the program’s outcome of both groups connecting

#37620 5428 and learning off of each other. CatholicCare already has services available for Seniors, Families, Relationships & Separation & Children/Young people but nothing similar to the program that has been created. This program aims to reflect the principles of human dignity and nurturing the common good “fostering relationships so everyone has a sense of belonging”[ CITATION Cat \l 1033 ] Legal, safety, ethical and cultural considerations: Legal Safety *Confidentiality & Privacy *WHS *Conflicts of Interest

Evaluation/plan/summary: We are going to know the program is a success by evaluating at the end weather the program met the objectives and aims set in place. The following factors are also important: *Participants attendance in the program; keep coming back with enthusiasm and ready to see what the day holds, were more days popular than the others i.e. workshop days had more participants show up than non-workshops days, as well as completion (did we end with as many people as we started out with, did we increase or decrease numbers?) *Funding/budget conclusion; did we stay within the budget or go over (and if so how much?) *Positive feedback on survey’s and discussions; continuously monitored surveys, complaints/compliments and feedback throughout the course of the program *Both Seniors and Youth interacted with each other/ friendships were made and they had a positive experience *How the Organisation (Program Leader/s) dealt with emergency/critical situations; were policies and procedures followed, we staff trained and equipped with the appropriate and relevant knowledge) *Community engagement: How the program interacted with the community and kept open advertisement for prospective participants (Youth and Seniors in the target groups) to engage Lastly the most successful indicator of the program would be that we met (even better, went above) our “Outcome Goals”!
