Diabetes Mellitus Type 2

Visit ChooseMyPlate.gov

A chronic disease characterized by insufficient production of insulin in the pancreas or when the body cannot efficiently use the insulin it produces. This leads to an increased concentration of glucose in the bloodstream (hyperglycemia). It is characterized by disturbances in carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism. Sustained hyperglycemia has been shown to affect almost all tissues in the body and is associated with significant complications of multiple organ systems, including the eyes, nerves, kidneys, and blood vessels.

Choose MyPlate is a resource to provide information on making good nutritional food choices.

Type 2 diabetes involves insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion.

Am I at risk? Risk factors are split between two categories; modifiable and unmodifiable Modifiable risks include: Smoking, being overweight or having obesity, stress, physical inactivity, poor nutrition (eating a diet high in saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol and sodium), drinking too much alcohol.

Exercise benefits people with diabetes and those at risk for diabetes by helping manage weight, by improving blood sugar levels, and by improving heart health. For a person with diabetes, exercise is just as important as diet and medication.

Unmodifiable risks include: Age, gender, ethnic descent (African American), family history, genetics.

Reflection 1. Steamed vegetables are a great highfiber, low carb option that’s packed with nutrients, and low-carb diets can lower your A1C. Croutons are high carb which makes the Caesar salad less healthy. 2. Fresh air and exercise! Getting up once every half hour is much better than continuous sitting. Not only does cardio impact weight loss, but staying active has positive mental benefits, including reducing stress and anxiety. 3. Eating a high-fiber, low-carb food is good for your blood sugar, so skip the drive-through! Drinking water is also good for helping lower your A1C, so drink plenty of H2O wherever you may go! Stress can wreak havoc on your blood sugar, enjoy the needed R & R! 4. While diet and exercise for type 2 diabetes , monitoring A1C and taking the correct medications are all part of a long-term plan, it’s time to talk about your heart! Successful management of type 2 diabetes involves more than just testing A1C and monitoring blood sugar. When you add a healthy diet, exercise and the right medications, you can reduce the likelihood of serious complications in the future.
