Diagnostic Procedure

Thompson STUDENT NAME Emily _____________________________________ Hemoglobin A1c PROCEDURE NAME ____________________________________________________________________ REVIEW MODULE CHAPTER ___________

Description of Procedure Blood test results that give you an average blood sugar level over the past two to three months.

Indications A1c tests are given if a patient is at risk for diabetes or if they are already diagnosed with diabetes and need to see if treatment options are working.

Interpretation of Findings An A1c of 5.7% or lower is a great finding! It indicates a healthy patient. An A1c of 5.7-6.4% are prediabetic levels. These levels would require patient education on proper diet and exercise routines. An A1c of 6.5% or higher indicates diabetes. Typically, a " normal" A1c for a diabetic is 7%.

Potential Complications There are no major complications for the A1c test itself, however, there can be complications if the test results are elevated. A prediabetic level can pose the complication of oncoming diabetes, and diabetic levels can definitely increase the complications of the disease as well, such as retionopathy, neuropathy, extreme hyperglycemia, foot ulcers, and much more.

The nurse should also educate the client on who to be in contact with if they begin showing symptoms of extreme hypo or hyperglycemia.

Nursing Interventions The nurse should educate the client about the disease and the complications of the disease. The nurse should also teach the client how to self manage the disease in order to regulate A1c levels. In addition, the nurse should promote seeking professional help if any complications arise....
