Clonidine Supression Test PROCEDURE NAME ____________________________________________________________________ REVIEW MODULE CHAPTER 76 ___________
Description of Procedure The clonidine suppression test is performed by taking a blood sample before the administration of clonidine. The clonidine is then administered and then three hours after the tests, the levels of adrenaline and noradrenaline are measured. No changes would indicate the presence of a pheochromocytoma.
Indications -Confirms a pheochromocytoma
CONSIDERATIONS
Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) -Pre-procedure: The nurse should insert a venous cannula and allow the client to rest 30 minutes prior to specimen collection. -Intra-procedure: A baseline specimen should be collected prior to administering clonidine. Once the clonidine is administered the specimen is to be collected 3 hours after. -Post-procedure: The nurse should continue monitoring BP for at least 1 hour after procedure.
Interpretation of Findings -If a client does not have a pheochromocytoma, clonidine supresses catecholamine release and decreases the blood level of catecholamines (decreases BP) -If a client has pheochromocytoma, clonidine has no effect on BP.
Potential Complications -Severe hypotension
ACTIVE LEARNING TEMPLATES
Client Education -Advise client to stop all alpha and beta blocking agents 48 hours prior to the test. -Warn client to avoid paracetamol, tricyclic antidepressants such as amitryptiline and diuretics for 5 days prior to the test. -Frail patients, or those with coronary heart disease or episodes of hypotension or collapse should not undergo this test. -Warn the patient that they will experience a drop in blood pressure during the test.
Nursing Interventions -Monitor the client for hypotension...
