Action/Purpose Action: Binds to opiate receptors in the CNS. Alters perception of and response to painful stimuli while producing generalized CNS depression

Medication Portfolio Pharmacologic Classification: Opioid agonist

Major Side Effects Confusion, sedation, hypotension, constipation, respiratory depression, dizziness, nausea, Bradycardia, headache

Therapeutic Classification: Allergy, cold and cough remedies (antitussives), opioid analgesics

Nursing Interventions Pre Med Administration: Assess risk for opioid addiction or misuse Assess BP and respirations Assess cough and lung sounds Assess bowel function Assess pain location and intensity prior to administration

Purpose: Decrease in moderate to severe pain. Suppression of cough

Post Med Administration: Assess BP and respirations Assess cough and lung sounds Assess bowel function Assess pain location and intensity 1 hour IM or PO
