Description

Globalisation as a theory describes a system by which societies share their culture, money and resources between countries, driven by international trade, investment and supported by information technology. Of the many theories of globalisation, in this post I'll be discussing two theories of globalisation, which are the world system theory and world polity theory. World system theory views the world as a unit, rather than individual countries, divided into three categories. The categories are core, semi peripheral and the peripheral countries. In this system, the core countries are successful and economically independent, the semi peripheral countries serve as a buffer between the core and the peripheral regions and are quite economically stable, while the peripheral regions are the poorest and supply raw materials for processing at the core. The world polity theory tries to unify the world as one entity, with the recognition that every country brings something valuable to the global table and should be empowered to work collectively for the world benefit. This implies that in the world polity system each member states participates in making collective goals and executing activities for symbiotic benefits. Between the two theories of globalization described above, I mostly agree with the world polity system because I believe it's a more fairer system that treats member states as equals who have an equal opportunity to contribute to the planning and implementation of globalisation ideas. I disagree with the world system theory because, coming from Africa, I believe it promotes an exploitative system of capitalism and globalisation that mostly benefits countries at the core, while the resource rich peripheral states remain poor.
