Description

Discussion Unit 2 Why Architects Copy the Classical Style Classical architecture started in ancient Greece and Rome with its own set of rules, based on the five architecture orders (Schaller, 2016). Greek architecture displays great logic and order, applying mathematics to create symmetry that is pleasing to the eyes. The Greeks paid close attention to creating visual effects, and they had three styles known as classic orders: Doric, Ionic and Corinthian. (Schaller, 2016). I think architects chose to copy the classical style as it gives the perception of boldness, durability and authority, especially since ancient Greece used it to construct their important buildings. Messages Conveyed by the Classical Style As modern architecture adopts the classical style to create beautiful and unique buildings, the style conveys a sense of tradition while incorporating aspects of the geometrical rule, giving harmony and generating a sense of the building's importance. Roman architects were known for arches and domes; significant buildings featured domes, such as the Pantheon, a Roman temple that was one of the most influential buildings in ancient architecture (Khan Academy, n.d.a). According to Khan Academy (n.d.b), the ancient Greeks' classic architectural style had essential elements such as the post and lintels, which came from ancient building systems (Stonehenge); today, the concept features two-by-four lumber nailed together. The pediment, known as gabled roofs, is the triangular space at the top of Greek temples (Khan Academy, n.d.b). The entablature, which falls below the roof, and the Doric order uses triglyphs and metopes to decorate it in a particular way; these would be beams that fall directly over the columns, referred to as shafts. (Khan Academy, n.d.b). How is the building’s function suited to the classical style? Over the years, the main change in construction has been the material and its usage. We have seen a shift from aesthetics to function; however, aspects of the system are still maintained, such as the post and lintels, columns and beans and gabled roof. The building is architecturally attractive with the classical style, with the columns giving a taller, impressive look while fulfilling its function. Reference Craven, J. (2018).
