Description

Finlay 1 Matthew Finlay Mr. Murphy APUSH 11 November 2021 Unit 2 Test - LEQ The Market Revolution of the 19th century brought about a drastic change in the American economy as well as global trade and its economy. This drastic change ultimately effected the American ideas of freedom. The increasing need for workers gave opportunities to citizens, including women and blacks in northern states. The revolution encouraged individualism and personal freedom, allowing for a free trade and free market economy. However, non-white males during this time found themselves limited in their opportunities for work and were paid non-livable wages when they did work. That said, the Market Revolution of the 19th century changed the meaning of freedom in America to a great extent. Not only did the new economy change the freedom for white males, but it also limited the freedom of women and black Americans. White males prospered greatly during the Market Revolution, as they were given more personal freedom in the new economy. They were able to take advantage of the increased number of jobs and other benefits from the idea of individualism that grew with the Market Revolution. The variety of jobs allowed for people to try new things and work jobs that best fit them. It allowed the people to benefit off their skills in a particular area that may not have given them the same benefits in the past. In all, the market revolution gave white males more economic freedom, allowing them to choose jobs that best fits them, as the variety of jobs increased greatly, and individualism was taking shape in the new American economy.

Finlay 2 While some were able to use the economic freedom benefits of the Market Revolution, some were excluded of these benefits. In fact, non-white males were arguably given less freedom than they had before. For instance, while free blacks had previously made good wages in craftsmanship, the revolution led to more white craftsmen, resulting in hostility directed towards black craftsmanship. The hostility and exclusion in craftmanship were one of many obstacles blacks faced during this time. Employers of all industries often refused to hire blacks, leading to the black Americans being forced to settle for lower paid jobs, such as a barber or servant. They were even banned from states, making it even clearer on how free blacks were met with a limit in freedom during the Market Revolution. Another group of people that were excluded from the benefits of the Market Revolution were women. Women were limited to job opportunities that men had been provided. For instance, the largest employment category for women were domestic servants of middle-class homes. These low paying jobs had women fighting for survival. Essentially, the only freedom given to women in terms of job opportunities was to either work in a factory or as servant in one’s home. That said, the Market Revolution arguably did more harm than good to the meaning of freedom in terms of women, as they were forced to work as domestic servants and factory workers in order to survive economically. The Market Revolution offered a positive change in meaning of freedom towards white males, as they embraced individualism and benefited off the growing free market economy in America. However, the lack of freedom for both women and blacks continued, as they were greatly limited in job opportunities, even though more jobs were becoming available. So, while the Market Revolution encouraged economic freedom, only white males were able to use the new benefits, as women and black Americans were given a reduction in economic freedom if
