Compare and Contrast Essay : Discobolus and Boxer at Rest Through human life there has been some many different styles ,techniques, and meaning of art. The most impressive art is Ancient Greek because of it change in art during each time period.The time period of Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic. This essay will focus on the Classical and Hellenistic time period. The two pieces of art are Myron, Discobolus (Discus Thrower) a Roman copy of an ancient Greek bronze sculpture from 450 B.C.E during the Classical Period. This artwork is a roman copy and the original is made out of bronze.The sculpture is made out of marble and the man is posed to throw a discus. The second piece of artwork is Apollonius Boxer at Rest an ancient Greek bronze sculpture from 100 B.C.E during the Hellenistic time period. This artwork is a sculpture made out of bronze and the man is posed sitting down. As said in the name of the artwork the man is a boxer his hands wrapped in leather. This essay will compare and contrast the formal qualities of two artworks.The formal qualities that will be addressed in both artworks is material and line. The Myron, Discobolus (Discus Thrower) and Apollonius Boxer at Rest are different from the type of material they are made from. The Myron, Discobolus (Discus Thrower) is made out of white marble. In different types of lighting the white marble turn to a light grey when there is natural light. The texture is smooth but when the details of human anatomy on sculpture of the man makes the marble look rough. The human anatomy on the sculpture look 3 dimensions ,

Orozco 2 very persist in show every aspect of the human body ,and is expressed by the muscular muscles. This material is typically used for greek and roman copies because of the concept of white skin means class, sophisticated , and beauty. The sculpture was used for people to have displaced in their homes. The sculpture was originally from Greece but the sculpture is a roman copy. The second piece of artwork is Apollonius Boxer at Rest made out of bronze and other metal.The bronze material lets the sculpture human anatomy look 3 dimensional not flat. The material lets the sculpture have character since he is a boxer his face has scars , nose is broken and in a seated/ slouch position making he looked defeated. If using the marble material it couldn't get the fine detail in the face like the bronze material does. The colors of the material is green ,brown , and red .The red is to show blood and the character of a boxer. Both artworks are different because the material of each sculpture have different meanings .The Myron, Discobolus (Discus Thrower) is tradition ancient greek art meaning beauty,strength, andclass. The Apollonius Boxer at Rest is made of bronzed and the details of the sculptures make it not beautiful , old ,and weak.The two art work are different because of the material they are made from. The Myron, Discobolus (Discus Thrower) and Apollonius Boxer at Rest are similar by lines. Both art works the Myron, Discobolus (Discus Thrower) and Apollonius Boxer have very detail lines in the human anatomy. Both sculptures have curvy line to show strength , round, and define arm muscles. Also, the torso area the line are sharp to show define muscles.The detail in the hair and bread of the sculpture of the boxer has curvy line and sharp lines to show character. It's not typical for greek sculpture to have lots of hair and a bread. The Greek artist have perfected the human anatomy by using line to show dimision , length, and detail. Orozco 3 period and Hellenistic period. Both artwork originally from Greece one show the typical high class of greece and the other artwork shows how art has changed and is not about beauty. Both artworks are very different from material , function and meaning....
