Description

Avery Romero Professor Wallo English Composition & Research February 15, 2019 Common Ground Solution Essay In this essay I hope to resolve the differences in opinion when it comes to tattoo’s in the workplace. I’m hoping to see a positive change in attitudes towards those with tattoo’s and less discrimination. I would like to clarify the thoughts of those who are opposed to tattoo’s and come up with a solution to both sides of the conflict. Most people will argue that tattoo’s look unprofessional or more specifically look vulgar. Although we live in a society today that seems to find something offensive in every possible thing, I do agree that sometimes tattoo’s can be vulgar. Stapaw states, “Allowing tattoos and piercings at work doesn't mean employers have to allow vulgar, obscene, or racy tattoos or piercings. Companies around the world allow staff to have tattoos and piercings but won't allow offensive body jewelry or offensive tattoos in the workplace.” I think it’s important realizing that not all tattoos are offensive or obscene. I agree with those not wanting to see vulgar or obscene tattoos. There are certain times I agree that a tattoo may be to inappropriate such as dirty saying or genitalia tattooed on them. I also think it’s important to realize that although those things could have a background story that they should take into consideration those around them if it is something that vulgar. A lot of people also have a more conservative take on it and have just been raised a different way. Some people also don’t like tattoos for religious reasons. In contrast, I think that tattoos in the workplace should be allowed. I don’t think it’s fair to base someone’s professional abilities on their tattoos. The Odyssey wrote, “The whole

Most tattoo artist ask why someone is getting the tattoo they are getting which can have a whole backstory to it.” I think that is an important thought to keep in mind. So many people get tattoos for a deeper meaning and can take years really deciding on something sentimental. Although I can see the other person’s side it is ultimately a public place and you will always have to encounter things you don’t always like. Not everyone will have the same views or beliefs but all we can learn to do is tolerate each other’s beliefs while being respectful. Another quote from the Odyssey says “Many people have things that mean something to them. It could be a souvenir, something a family member gave them, or even a family pet. They like to show them off or even keep that certain thing for private reasons. The smallest thing can mean something big to a person.” As someone with multiple tattoos, I think it is important that people see me for me and not judge me based off something on my body that they have no context to. I have always been able to do my job and have even received employee of the month multiple jobs. My tattoos have never interfered with my job performance nor how I have treated our customers. I don’t think it’s important that I have tattoos and quite honestly, I really don’t believe it is anyone’s place to judge me for something that has no effect on them. I do think it is fair to not want to see someone’s vulgar tattoos so I feel like there should be some sort of guideline of what that would entail. However, I don’t believe that it is fair to censor or turn down all people for just having tattoos. Nor do I think it is fair to base their professional merit. I think we could look at their professional history and more importantly how they take care of themselves hygiene and attitude wise. Basing a person off their tattoos to me in

Avery Romero Professor Wallo English Composition & Research February 15, 2019 my opinion is no better than judging someone based off their looks. I think if both sides could learn to see each other’s point of view their could be a better respect and understanding from each side where the other is coming from.
