Summary

Weekly discussion assignment....

Description

Read the College Paper Case Study. As you read, consider how you would rate the responsibility of each person involved. Next, review the University of the People's Academic Integrity and Code of Conduct Statements. When you’re done reading, compose a discussion post that addresses the following: 1. 2. 3.

Who is at fault for plagiarizing, and why? How could plagiarism have been avoided? Why do students plagiarize? How will you ensure that you will not inadvertently plagiarize while engaged in your studies at UoPeople? Be sure to discuss at least two strategies you will use to prevent plagiarism in your work and to address the importance of APA citation and references.

Your response should be at least 250 words. When you’re done, read, rate, and comment on at least three of your classmates’ posts. Your responses should be at least 100 words that advance the discussion of the topic.

The code of academic integrity of University of The People states ”University of the People students are expected to work diligently to ensure that all assignments, exams or other coursework submitted represents the student's original work and follows acceptable academic practices.”(UoPeople Catalog | September 1, 2018 – August 31, 2019) It also states that “students must submit their own individual work at all times unless instructed to participate in group work as part of a course requirement.” (UoPeople Catalog | September 1, 2018 – August 31, 2019) Hence, in this case it can clearly be seen that both Reggie and Arnie are at fault for plagiarizing. They are at fault because in the code of academic integrity it states that” Sources must be documented through acceptable scholarly references and citations, and the extent to which the sources have been used must be apparent to the reader”. It further states that “Plagiarism will not be tolerated at any time; students are required to learn and be personally responsible for educating themselves about plagiarism and the appropriate forms of citation and referencing sources”. (UoPeople Catalog | September 1, 2018 – August 31, 2019) Consequently, the students taking the essay from the internet and using parts of it as their own in order to make their essay constitutes plagiarism. Reggie is also further guilty of collusion as stated in the code of academic integrity “Collusion—assisting another student in committing an act of academic dishonesty.” (UoPeople Catalog | September 1, 2018 – August 31, 2019) Plagiarism could have been avoided here in two ways, firstly if the students had produced their own work and secondly if they had processed their work through a plagiarism checker it would have detected that and informed them before they submitted it.

Students plagiarize mainly because they don’t have enough time to do the work or they just cannot do it. Therefore, they seek help from other people directly or indirectly through the internet, as was the case for Reggie and Arnie. In order for me not to inadvertently find myself plagiarizing I will employ certain methodologies. Firstly, I will always endeavor to do my own writings and this will almost guarantee me not plagiarizing. Secondly, I will use the plagiarism checker to go through my work to make sure it is safe to submit. Thirdly, I will make use of referencing wherever possible and especially using the APA format which is the acceptable format for University of The People. The use of citations in my work will definitely guarantee me not unintentionally plagiarizing anything.
