PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action Aids in the clearance of bronchial secretions by digesting neutrophil DNA deposited in the pulmonary mucosa reducing viscosity of sputum
Therapeutic Use Decreased infection rates and improved pulmonary function used to lower the number of lung infections and help lung function in cystic fibrosis
Complications allergic reaction, chest pain or pressure, fever, shortness of breath, runny nose, sore throat, eye irritation
Medication Administration administered via nebulizer, advise patient on proper use and have patient demonstrate use back to you, do not administer if cloudy, leaking, or has particles, throw away unused medication
Contraindications/Precautions Contraindicated if allergy to Chinese Hamster Ovary cell products.Use cautiously in children incidence of cough, rhinitis and rash increased use cautiously in those with renal and hepatic impairment
Interactions not recommended for use in pregnancy and breastfeeding women no clinically important drug-drug interactions
Nursing Interventions Educate patient on side effects, what drug is for, how to administer and what to report. Evaluate presence of cough and mucous-amount, color, consistency, presence of productive cough
