Description

DOUBLE SINAWALI Sinawali is the arnis, escrima, and kali's double-cane combat style. Sinawali is derived from the Tagalog word "sawali," which refers to woven split bamboo mats used as nipa hut walls. Sinawali weapons fighting's crisscrossing movements resemble the pattern of these mats, hence the name. Sinawali drills are useful for improving quick reactions because of their high-speed nature. In these drills, the rapid-fire touch of sticks sharpens one's perception of motion. Another advantage of sinawali training is that it improves both hand strength and coordination. The majority of these drills teach the practitioner to link the movements of the weak and strong hands, creating ambidexterity. Punong Lakan Garitony Nicolas, dubbed "The Father of Modern Sinawali," created over 300 sinawali drill variations. Nicolas illustrates a fighting application of sinawali in the photos above.
