DUTY ETHICS (Deontological Ethics)
Treat people as ends, not just means

Kant’s Justification of Respect Principle

Humans ought to be respected because they have dignity
•
Dignity=the autonomy to make ethical decisions for oneself
•
Humans are beyond price—they have dignity; most animals do not
Why Do People Have Dignity?
•
Most people are capable of autonomy and self-government
•
They are therefore responsible
•
Some humans are not capable of autonomy or self-government (young children, severe dementia, some disabled people, etc.)
Causal determinism
•
The view that the state of the world at a given time determines the state of the world at the next moment
•
Every event that occurs, including human action, is entirely the result of earlier causes [event causation]...
