E7: Introduction to Computer Programming for Scientists and Engineers 1CourseObjectives E7isanintroductorycourseoncomputerprogrammingforlower‐division students in science andengineering.Theprincipalgoalofthecourseistointroducebasiccomputerprogramming concepts and apply them to computer‐based problem‐solving methods. The course stresses hands‐on computer programming using MATLAB, a powerful high‐level programming environment.
2CourseFormat E7 consists of classroom lectures, computer laboratory sections, and classroom discussions. Faculty instructor delivers lectures and discussions, while student instructors (GSIs) supervise laboratorysections. LectureswillbeginonWednesday,August23,andheldMondaysandWednesdaysin2050Valley LifeSciences(VLS),from9:10to10:00am.DiscussionswillbeginonFriday,August25,andbe heldFridaysin2050VLSfrom9:10to10:00am.Thediscussionswillcoveradditionalexercises, presentanddiscusstheupcominghomework/laboratoryassignments,andanswerquestions. Laboratorysectionswillbeginonthesecondweekofinstruction,startingMonday,August28.

All material, schedules, homework,andcommunicationregardingthecoursewillbehandledthroughthiswebsite.Your bCoursesaccountwillalsogiveyousecureaccesstoyourgradesandtoadiscussionboardfrom where you will be able to communicate with the faculty, GSIs, and your classmates. For the discussion board we will be using Piazza (linked via bCourses), which is accessed via the E7 bCourses site. The discussion board is an excellent forum to post questions regarding the coursework.Youarestronglyencouragedtoposttechnicalquestionsonthediscussionboard, asopposed tocommunicating themby privateemail. It isyour responsibilityto checkthe E7 bCoursessitefrequently,asimportantinformationaboutthecoursewillberoutinelypostedon bCourseswithoutnecessarilybeingannouncedinthelectures.

5CourseTextandProgrammingLanguage Thereisnorequiredtextbookforthecourse. WehighlyrecommendyouobtainthelatestreleaseoftheStudentVersionofMATLAB,which canbeobtained(free)viaUCBerkeley’sSoftware.TheMatlabsoftwarecomeswithextensive built‐in help. Additional help and tutorials can be found on the Mathworks website. Among otherthings,thiswebsitecontainsdocumentation,includingmanualsthatyoucandownloadfor free.InadditiontotheMatlabdocumentation,wewillposthandoutsonbCourses.
6Assignments Therewillbeapproximately12assignments(generallydueeveryweek).Allassignmentsmust beturnedinnolaterthan11:59pmontheFridayoftheweektheyaredue.Assignmentsare meant to be worked onboth outside of class and during laboratory sections. Here are some importantguidelines: (i)TheprocedureforworkingonyourassignmentswillbeexplainedduringtheDiscussionSession onFriday,August25.Weeklylaboratoryassignmentswillbeavailablefordownload(generally onThursdays)intheformofaPDFfile.Youwillalsohavetodownloadanauto‐graderMatlab pfile(generallyafewdaysbeforetheassignmentduedate),whichyoucanrunafteryouhave completedpartorallofyourassignment.Theauto‐graderpfilewillgradeyourworksoyoucan seeyourscore.Pleaseusetheexactfunctionsignaturesasspecifiedforeachproblem.Youneed touploada.zipfilecontainingallthemfilestobCoursesnolaterthan11:59pmontheFridayof theweektheyaredue.Nameyourzippedfilelastname_firstname_hw1forthefirsthomework, etc.Youcanuploadthisfilemultipletimesuntilthedeadlineandonlyyourlastuploadedfilewill bepreserved.Furtherdetailswillbeprovidedineachassignment. (ii) Owing to the size of the class, late assignments will not be accepted under any circumstances. (iii)Forgradingpurposes,twoofthelowestgradesassignmentswillbedropped. (iv)Itisacceptabletodiscusswithyourclassmatesthematerialcontainedintheassignments. However,werequirethatyoucompleteallassignmentsonyourown.Copyingsomeoneelse's workorallowingyourworktobecopiedconstitutescheating,andwillresultinatleastzero credit for the entire assignment, as well as possible disciplinary action (see the Academic Honestysectionbelow).

7MidtermsandFinal There will be two 50‐minute midterm examinations during the Friday discussion times (see calendarfordates).Also,therewillbea3‐hourfinalexamination on Monday, December11, 7:00‐10:00 pm (Final exam Group 4). You will be required to provide your student ID before enteringtheexaminationroom.Itisyourresponsibilitynottoenrollinanothercoursethatis partofExamgroup4(whichincludesallcoursestaughtMWF&MTWTF,9&9:30am).
