(2014). How Children Develop, 4th Edition. Course Requirements Students are expected to attend class. If you are unable to attend a particular class, you are responsible for obtaining the class notes from another student. Grades will be based on three exam scores (300 points total) and one paper (20 points). You will need to receive 93% of all possible points to receive an A, 90% to receive an A-, 87% to receive a B+, 83% to receive a B, 80% to receive a B-, etc. Exams Four exams will be offered, and the highest three scores will be counted toward students' final grades. Each exam will cover material presented in class as well as material contained in the textbook. The exams will be offered at the scheduled times only. The first exam will be on Thursday, October 19 and will cover material up to that point. The second exam will be on Thursday, November 9 and will cover material presented following the first exam up to that point. The third exam will be on Thursday, December 7 and will cover material presented following the second exam up to that point. The final exam will be on Friday, December 15, from 11:30 am to 1:00 p.m. and will be cumulative. Each of the four exams will be based on a total of 100 points, for a maximum combined score of 300 points. You will need to bring a #2 pencil to each exam. You will be provided with a scantron during class. Any challenge to the grading of exams must be submitted in writing within one week of the date exam scores are posted. Paper Students will write a short paper (about two double-spaced pages). About half of the paper should describe background research and about half should describe one or more research questions and a research strategy for gaining some insight into the questions. Papers should be submitted by November 16 and will not be accepted after December 5. Papers will be submitted through TritonEd (Content > Paper > Class Paper), which is set up to scan your paper using Turnitin. Please note that whatever paper you upload will be your final draft. The background research should come from one of the following three categories, and you should note the category in your submission. A. an empirical research article in an academic journal B. an informal developmental psychology “experiment” conducted based on prior research C. one or more interviews using Beyond Small Talk questions Extra Credit Students can earn up to a total of 4 extra credit points total. This can be done by earning up to 2 credit hours of experiments on Sona (ucsd.sona-systems.com), with each hour credited with 2 points. Alternatively, students may make arrangements to do a second written assignment, such as summarizing and analyzing a journal article. All extra credit work must be complete by December 6.
