Description

EACS 4B: East Asia Pre-Modern Section Syllabus Instructor: Professors Will Fleming & Xiaorong Li TA: Ian Hunter E-mail: [email protected] *Note: If you send me an email, please allow for at least 24-hours to respond. TA Office Hours: Friday 11am – 1pm. By Zoom until further notice, in person location/time TBD should the situation change. Lectures: TR 2:00PM – 3:15PM, Buchanan Hall 1910 (Subject to change; Zoom for first session, pre-recorded lectures on GauchoCast thereafter). Sections: M 5-5:50pm via Zoom first two weeks (HSSB 4201) M 6-6:50pm via Zoom first two weeks (HSSB 3202) M 7-7:50pm via Zoom first two weeks (Girvetz Hall 1108) Section Goals The purpose and objective for this section is to further your understanding of the concepts and ideas touched upon both in lecture and the assigned readings, as well as to further your engagement with the history and culture of pre-modern China and Japan. As the facilitator for this section, I want to foster an environment where everyone feels comfortable expressing their opinions in a positive and respectful manner, in addition to increasing your ability to critically analyze and engage with the source material. Attendance and Participation: The section grade is worth 20% of your overall, and as such is incredibly important that you be well-prepared before coming to section by completing all assigned readings. Contributing to in-class discussion and asking relevant questions will help your participation grade. Prior to section each week I will send everyone a list of several questions to consider that we will be discussing in class. I will assign questions to students and they will be expected to prepare in-depth answers before attending section, and feel free to prepare written responses in advance if doing so helps. At these times your job is to lead off the discussion, but every student is expected to consider each question in full and be prepared to continue the conversation on their own or should I call on you. These answers should be a mixture of detail from the readings and your own personal thoughts on the matter, but they are also meant to get the conversation going and don’t need to cover every base. Given that these are very strange times that we are living in, attendance may understandably be an issue for many of you; however, you are still expected to attend section each week. If you can’t attend your assigned section for some reason, please let me know as far in advance as possible so that we problem solve the issue together. Academic Integrity: Plagiarism will not be tolerated and is considered a serious offense. This includes neglecting to cite work and attempting to pass off someone else’s work as your own. This can result in a failing grade in the course as well as probation and/or expulsion from UCSB.

Disabilities: If you have a disability, please speak with me to discuss necessary accommodations. You must also register with the Disabled Students Program. CAPS: University education and life can be not only academically demanding but also emotionally draining. In such cases often the best thing you can do is find someone to talk to, which is why UCSB provides free short-term counseling services to all registered students through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Should you find yourself struggling with your emotional and mental health, please follow the link below to schedule an assessment with CAPS, or come see me during my office hours or by appointment as soon as possible, and I will help you get the assistance you need. https://caps.sa.ucsb.edu/ Dates to Remember: th • January 17 : Martin Luther King Jr. Day rd • February 3 : Midterm th • February 13 : First Reading Summary and First Reading Response Due st • February 21 : President’s Day th • March 13 : Second Reading Summary and Second Reading Response Due • Final Exam: Date and Time TBD...
