Effects of Bullying

Grand Canyon University UNV 104: Communicating Information Legally and Ethically

Effects of Bullying Children in school often become targets of bullying and adults normally do not act without evidence which results in the children being verbally, physically, and emotionally

tortured. It is important for teachers and parents to understand that they play a vital role in so many children’s lives and their attentiveness and showing affection towards their situation can impact their life for the better. Bullying can impact children’s lives as well as their well-being as educational facilities are supposed to be a safe and secure place but are let down due to the lack of support from teachers this can be challenging for them. Children require love and support their minds crave the attentiveness of their elders and this only helps them do better by improving their confidence and help them believe n themselves. Bullying has proven to negatively impact children in academic learning experiences, cause psychological stress, and develop low selfesteem issues. Academic Learning Affects The first challenge children face when they are bullied is in their academic experience. Education is important for everyone in order to create a happy and stable life but unfortunately children who are bullied lose both confidence and concentration in the academic field due to becoming victims of such a horrendous act. Academic failure occurs because the children begin to skip school to avoid running into the bullies hence resulting in inefficient behavior. In the examination for students who are bullied researchers found that both previous and current victims had sufficiently lower academic motivation than their peers (Young- Jones et al., 2015, pg.12). Bullying is a huge factor that ruins children’s concentration on academics due to the fear of standing out and become unmotivated learners. Strength comes from support and most adults forget to show support to children without realizing that they are role models for them and can make an impact on their lives. Bullying does not only result in children being academically unfit but also face challenges such as being psychological stress. Psychological Stress

The second most common issue students face is psychological stress. Students who are bullied are known to experience changes in their physical and mental health. Mental health problems increase headaches and emotional stress leading children to physically harm themselves sometimes resulting in death. Studies show that strainful social relations are positively associated with negative emotions and these emotions in turn, are positively associated with self-harm and suicidal ideation (Hay et al., 2010, pg. 10/12). There have been so many cases in which kids found themselves in vulnerable situations and harmed themselves with hopes of having everything that is happening come to an end but it only gets worse. Children are known to experience anxiety and depression leading to self-harm such as cutting or burning themselves. This is a way they emotionally believe is to decrease negative emotions without realizing the reality of the major consequences they will have to face. No student should have to face the feeling of being lonely it is important to reach out and understand their feelings and be a good listener for them. The lack of attention and the increasing rate of anxiety and depression leads to lower confidence levels and self-esteem issues. Low Self-Esteem While students face academic loss and psychological stress, there is one more issue that students struggle with and that is low self-esteem. Children who have been targeted by bullies’ struggle with anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and low self-esteem not only when it is occurring but overall. Children often become less confident and begin to doubt themselves. The feeling of being trapped and targeted by a bully lead to them feeling lonely and unwanted with the repeated reminder of them not being worthy enough. The relation between bullying and low self-esteem is that it is a powerful source of struggle with stress and suicidal thoughts (Tural

Hesapcioglu et al., 2018, pg.2). Parents and teachers can play a key role in changing this negative continuous chain of bullying and make it come to a complete halt. Conclusion In conclusion, bullying has proven to affect students in their academic learning process and result in life-long matters of problems down the road. Psychological stress may result in students drifting from their normal lives and become astray. Further, low self-esteem issues cause students to detach from their schools and affect their future career. Bullying can be avoided by teaching students’ healthier interaction skills and kindness both in school and at home. Teaching good examples of kindness and leadership can impact both the bully and the victim of bullying.
