ENG 098/099 Pre-final exam 08/13/19 Eliminating Mass Shooting Lately, all I heard in the news is another mass shootings happened. People are afraid, and this cannot be helped. Mass shootings events are happening everywhere; in schools, universities, concerts, even in the supermarket. However, authorities are not doing enough to prevent and avoid these events. In my opinion, this problem will disappear from our society by raising the age of buying weapons, passing a mental health exam, and requiring a “buying license.” To prevent a mass shootings, the age to buy guns should be raised to 25 years old in all States. Federal law requires someone to be at least 21 to buy a handgun from a licensed dealer, but only 18 in most places to buy a long gun. This law is providing young and immature people with the possibility to do unforgivable felonies. In fact, most of the shooters are under 25 years old. Young people are not prepared to handle guns, they still acting like teenagers because they have not yet experience adulthood. By raising the age to buy guns to 25, we will make sure that young adults are mature enough to understand the compromise and consequences of owning a firearm. Also, to avoid mass shootings, federal law should require everyone to pass a mental ill exam before buying any armament. In most of the states, people with a good background can buy any type of weapons. However, this law only works to prevent delinquents from buying legal weapons since people with mental issues, hard to detect by their attitude, still can buy firearms. If you look at their profile, a mass shooter is someone with real mental problems. Usually, they are more violent, insecure, and derange than normal a normal person. Making people pass a mental ill exam before buying a gun can eliminate the possibility of having guns in the arms of wrong people.

All states should implement a new law which requires people to have a “gun buyer license” to acquire any gun. This is my terminology to the addition of a new license for those who pretend to buy weapons. The gun buyer license requires people to pass the background check, the mental ill exam, and another test to make sure people understand the compromise with society when buying a weapon. The exam has to be intended to educate guns collectors and firearm carriers in the responsibility of having these protection devices under their possession. As we know, educated people tend to react more calmed about any matter. Our society will be safer if the ones that can buy weapons are people who really qualify for it; for instance, someone that passed thru all this test. In conclusion, we are living in a time where people are afraid of walking, taking their child to school, or going to shopping because someone can start a random shooting. We need our representatives to take care of this matter as soon as possible. Law makers can start by implementing new laws where age of buying guns is raised, a mental ill exam is necessary, and a new license to gun buyers. This will make the problem disappear and help society to have a better firearm culture. However, I hope one day we don’t need to carry weapons for protection, just as a collection article....
