Writing Assignment #4 A Parkland, Florida shooting occurred February 14, 2018 which was done by someone named Nikolas Cruz. He opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School killing students, staff members and injuring others. The shooting was done in the afternoon, according to the police Cruz was carrying a rifle bag and a backpack. He was spotted by a staff member who radioed that he was purposely walking to the building. He entered the building and activated the fire alarm on purpose. This building was usually occupied by about 900 students and 30 teachers. After activating the fire alarm, he started shooting students and teachers, the fire alarm caused a confusion though since there was a fire drill earlier the same day. A staff member heard a gunfire and activated a code red lockdown. An armed officer heard the gunshot as well and stood in a defensive position between building 12 and building 7. This shooting lasted roughly about 6 minutes when the student dropped off the rifle on the third floor. He then left the scene by blending with other students to get out, walking to a mall where he bought a soda. At about 3:40 PM., he was stopped by the cops 2 miles from the school and arrested. School camera found out who the perpetrator was and came out to be Cruz and was recognized by an eyewitness. Nikolas Cruz and his brother were adopted by Roger and Lynda Cruz, the family bought a house in the suburb of Parkland, Florida in 1996. Lynda’s husband, Roger died and due to this Nikolas and his brother stayed alone with their mom to be raised by her. Just when Cruz was 10 years of age his mom called the police, the first time of many others to come. She called the cops because she couldn’t keep her kids under control. He used to fight a lot with his brother and

police cars had to show up to their house frequently due to this. In 2013 Lynda was pushed by the kid because she took away his Xbox and in 2014, deputies report he was using a BB gun to shoot a chicken. By early 2016, a post on Instagram was posted and a neighbor saw and told his dad. His dad called the cops and is known that the police told nearby schools, but no one knows if further steps were done. All his life, he was aggressive and wasn’t normal, fighting with his brother and doing wrong stuff. Nikolas Cruz killed 17 students and staff members while injuring 17 others, he was caught about an hour from the shooting. He was charged with murder and attempted murder, he confessed he was the perpetrator though.
