1 Say Nay to Year-Round Schools! No summer break? School 365 days a year? Should that be allowed? The question has been debated for quite some time. It has been said that our original calendar was based upon the agricultural calendar, when children were needed to work on the farms after school and during the summer, and therefore, it is now outdated. People are pushing the government towards year- round school to help alleviate overcrowding, to provide better student instruction, and to reduce the pressure on the working parent. However, I believe that year-round school should not be allowed because schools cannot guarantee families will be on the same track, kids just need some time off, and summer employment would be impossible. These are just some of many questions that need to be looked at. What would you do if your kids had different breaks at different times? It's true that there are several different year-round school calendars that a school can adopt, but what if it is the multi-track system? I knew a friend who attended a year-round school, and he was never on the same track as his brother. He would get a long winter break while his brother got the long summer break. It really left the family in quite a quandary. Speaking of family, they would now have to consider doubling their childcare costs if they both worked full-time. According to Costhelper.com, it costs the average family $611.00 per month for one child in daycare. It was over $1000.00 per month for more than one child in daycare. Also, there are snow days to consider. The kids in the traditional nine-month school calendar understand that they will have to make up lost days, but they still have a summer to look forward to. What about those in year- round schools? How do they make up lost days? By taking away days in their already shortened break times, or making them have longer school days?...
