Description

Spanking as The Synonym of Discipline When it comes to parenting, it can be a difficult and confusing experience for both the child and the parent to navigate through. Parenting is a highly debated subject, and one of the most frequently discussed topics is unquestionably the subject of discipline methods. For many years, spanking and other forms of physical reprimand were considered normal and even encouraged. Even Solomon, regarded as the wisest king in the Bible, approves of this method of discipline. I, for one, agree that physical reprimand is an effective method of motivating a child, and here are some reasons why. First, spanking helps children to know their place in the family. Nowadays, most children don’t understand that their parents are superior to them. Thus, they tend to argue with their parents, shout at them, order them to do the chores, and command them to give them money. This is the reason why they should be spanked: so that they will realize that their mother and father are not their younger siblings nor someone of their age. They need to be spanked so that they will learn to respect their parents and treat them as someone with authority in the house. They will know how to obey their parents’ words and will work when asked to perform a job. Oftentimes, we Filipinos get spanked for this reason. We are not allowed to disrespect our parents, and when they task us with doing something, we know that we have to do it because the belt and broom are waiting to hit us if we don’t. Second, spanking helps a child understand better that patience has a limit and, therefore, reckless acts should be managed. Not only will the child benefit from the virtue of this at his young age, but it is a lifetime lesson. When parents use lecturing alone as a discipline method, there is a tendency for the child to abuse the kindness of those parents. He will make the same mistake again and again and will ignore the teachings of the parents. Therefore, parents need to spank the child for him to know that chances, along with patience, have a limit. As such, the child won’t make the same mistake twice once he is warned. This might also be beneficial when he grows up and enters into a relationship because he is aware that if he makes the same mistake again, he will end up lonely. Third, the child will learn that bad decisions and actions lead to a painful situation. A child will never learn this lesson if he doesn’t get spanked after doing something bad. This will make him think that it is okay to do bad things from time to time and he will act according to his belief. When he grows up, he won’t be a good decision-maker. He might end up in jail, with a broken family, permanently disabled or, worst of all, dead just because he didn’t think of the consequences before doing an evil act. Lastly, spanking will help a child distinguish between right and wrong, or good and bad. Though lecturing is an easier form of teaching morals to children, few are those children who learn from this. That is why parents should spank them so that they will know that what they did was not good and they have to stop doing it. I can testify to this because, when I was a kid, my mother spanked me many times for being ill-mannered and thoughtless. This resulted in me becoming a disciplined child, afraid to do anything wrong for fear of being spanked. All these shows that spanking, when administered with love and consistency and in a straightforward and understandable manner, is an effective form of teaching children discipline. When done in a gentle way, followed by a calm lecture and explanation of why the

spanking happened, there is a good chance that the child will learn the lesson from it and not bear a grudge against the parents. REFERENCES Editor in Chief.
