Description

Aligning Standards and Learning Objectives Part 1: Lesson Plan Analysis Review the "COE Lesson Plan Example" located in Topic Materials. On the "Aligning Standards and Learning Objectives" template, write 250-500 words, responding to the following prompts, as they relate to the lesson plan:

What is the academic standard?

What is the learning objective?

Are the standard and objective aligned? How do you know? Provide a rationale.

What is the lesson about? What does this lesson cover?

Do the assessments effectively measure the academic standard and learning objective? Justify your response.

An academic standard is what a student should know, understand and be able to do. These standards are federal or state benchmarks that define where a student should be at in any specific grade level. The academic standard in the COE Lesson Plan is CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.7. This is when students use information gained from illustration and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (GCU, 2018). Lesson objectives are brief statements that describe what the student should know, understand or be able to do at the end of a lesson, unit, course, or school year (Great Schools Partnership, 2014). The learning objective in the COE Lesson Plan is, “By the end of the lesson, students will explain how illustrations are useful when making sense of a text, and how they give meaning to the text. Students will use the pictures and words in the text to show understanding of the material with 80% accuracy.” (GCU, 2018). Learning objectives are beneficial for both student and teacher. Teachers use objectives to ensure their lesson plans and assessments align with academic standards. They do this by using the KUD format which stands for what the student will know, understand and be able to do. The way we know the COE lesson plan objectives are aligned with state standards is because the objective follows the KUD format. The students will know illustrations are useful when making sense of the text, they will understand that they give meaning to what is being said and will apply this information by using illustrations and words to show understanding of the material. The last part related directly to the academic standard stated earlier. The lesson in the COE lesson plan is about what information students gather and understand about medieval time from the text and illustrations. This lesson covers the objective made earlier by having the students apply their use of illustrations and text in a small group. The assessment was having the students break off into

small groups to complete a vocabulary worksheet. They display their use of illustrations and text to determine the definitions of words which aligns with the objective since they are effectively applying their context clue skills (looks at the text and illustrations) to understand the meaning of words. The objective is aligned with the academic standard so the lesson is also aligned with it as well. Great Schools Partnership. (2014). UNDERSTAND Objective This is what students NEED TO UNDERSTAND

Students will understand how to apply their knowledge of beginning middle and end to identify key details such as who, what, when, where and why.

DO Objective This is what students NEED TO BE ABLE TO DO

Students will be able to retell the plot of the story along with key details such as the beginning middle and end with 80% accuracy.

Lesson Summary: In a few sentences, summarize this lesson.

Students will listen to the read aloud of “Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs” and be able to use their knowledge of beginning middle and end to retell the story back to the teacher. The students will then work together to reenact the story by assigning each other main character roles and keeping in mind key events that took place in the story when reenacting.
