Dear [Name], Thank you for your inquiry. Please provide more details on which insurance coverage you are on. All registered international students are automatically enrolled in a mandatory Foreign Health Insurance and charged this fee to their student account. The current provider of foreign health insurance is Guard Me. The cost of insurance is $261.59 per semester. Coverage dates align with the semester. For example, coverage for Fall is from September 1 to December 31. Beginning Fall 2020, there are two new enhancements to the plan; 1. Coverage up to $10,000 for medically necessary non-emergent treatment of a condition 2. Medical expenses incurred as a result of actions while impaired. Your policy ID is emailed to your @mun.ca account at the end of the first month of every semester by the insurance provider, Guard Me International. For information on coverage and making a claim, you can log into the insurance providers' website using your policy ID.

If you obtain public health care offered through the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador called MCP you might be eligible to opt-out of the foreign health and transfer to your student union managed health plan. ● For information on MCP visit this website. The MUNSU/GSU plan, provided by Green Shield Canada, acts as supplementary coverage to MCP, covering most of what it does not. In comparison, the Foreign Health Insurance plan covers primarily emergent conditions (it does have up to $10,000 a year for non-emergent medically necessary visits). Plus, MUNSU/GSU coverage is 1cheaper than Foreign Health. Yours sincerely, [Your Name] International Student Support Assistant Memorial University 18. I got a fraud call, and I shared my SIN number over the phone. What should I do now?

Dear [Name], Thank you for your inquiry. We are hearing that many students have received a phone call saying that their SIN number was suspended due to suspicious activities or “being in violation of immigration law”. It can be confusing, scary, and intimidating to get a call purporting to be from a Canadian government agency demanding that you provide or verify your personal information. Service Canada and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre have confirmed these calls are fraudulent, and that fraudsters are masking their phone number with legitimate government phone numbers to gain access to personal or financial information. Per advice received from Service Canada, if you receive a call like this and have to press one to speak to an agent, it is a scam. Do not press anything and hang up. If you receive a call and it is an actual person, you should ask who is calling and the reason for their call. If this call is not in relation to an open claim or case you are aware of (e.g. Seeking Employment Insurance benefits or a Social Insurance Number), hang up and then call an official Service Canada or Canada Revenue Agency number to confirm the call’s authenticity.
