THE SCENARIO At your part-time job in the computer repair store Computers-R-Us, a costumer brought in a computer that won't boot. Your job is to diagnose and correct the problem, fix it, and make sure that the computer loads the Windows Operating System.

BACKGROUND In general, troubleshooting is a form of problem solving, often applied to repair failed products or processes. It is a logical, systematic search for the source of a problem in order to solve it, and make the product or process operational again. Troubleshooting is needed to identify the symptoms. Determining the most likely cause is a process of elimination—eliminating potential causes of a problem. Finally, troubleshooting requires confirmation that the solution restores the product or process to its working state. In the IT world, good troubleshooting is a process that combines knowledge, experience, and intuition. As you practice service and support in a work environment, you will add to your experience and develop the intuition that will help you to quickly solve a variety of problems.

Look at the inside of the computer and follow the process from the previous section to complete your task.

EXPLAIN IMPORTANT: This section is where you explain how you solved the problem. Imagine that you are trying to explain what the problem was and how you solve it to your boss, who knows about computer hardware and the current subject. Use the correct language and the right terminology. What problems did you find? The problem was in the power supply and in the memory module.

EMT2370: Computer Hardware Systems What was the most challenging part to fix? It would be the memory modules because I had to take each of them out and test it in the Memory Tester which was time consuming. Also it was challenging for me to connect the power supply to the motherboard. How did you verify that the computer is now working correctly? I verified that the computer was working properly by turning on the computer and checking the bios system to verify that everything was fully functioning. What would you write as part of the job documentation? I would write “Troubleshooting the power supply and memory modules”.

What did you learn that complements something you already knew? How did your view or ideas change after your complete this lab? What does it mean that troubleshooting is a logical, systematic process? Troubleshooting is a form of solving problems in a logical way and is basically to be able to make a theory of the problem and be able to find the solutions. What steps would you add to the process from the PREDICT section? List all the steps of your new process here. I would not add any step to the process. It is good as it is.
