1ENGLISH 1100 – VV FALL 2021 Lecture: Monday 11:30-12:50. DGD’s Thurs.1:00-2:20 Prof. Ross Clarkson email: [email protected] Course Description This course is designed to help students develop the skills necessary for writing university-level essays. A good academic essay combines clear prose with a strong, clear argument, so we will be looking closely at what it means to make a good argument in essay form. This course will take place completely on-line. The lectures and DGD’s will take place at the above scheduled times on Zoom which you can access through Brightspace by signing on to English 1100 Q. The lectures will also be recorded so you can refer to them later, and there will also be a copy of each lecture on Brightspace. But if you cannot connect to the lectures through Zoom on time, the lectures will be recorded. We will also be using Brightspace throughout the course for quizzes, essay assignments and other functions. The lectures will also be posted on Brightspace. Required Texts: The Little Brown Essential Handbook by J. Aaron. Available at Benjamin Books, but used copies can also be found on Kijiji or other second-hand sources. Attendance Policy: Attendance will not be taken; however, 15% of the grade is determined by in-class quizzes and tests that cannot be made up at a later date. Late Policy: Late assignments will be accepted with a doctor’s note, or if you have another valid reason tell me before the assignment is due and arrangements can be made. But if you do not tell me beforehand or just do not have the essay ready on time, then there will be a 5% per day penalty for 7 days, and anything after 7 days is 0%. Academic dishonesty: Plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty are strictly prohibited and are punishable by a range of sanctions from 0% on the assignment to failure of the course. Sept. 20: Sentence fragments, fused sentences, and comma splices. Reading analytically and writing summaries. Ex. “Kiddie Thinks” (essay is on Brightspace). Paragraphs. Sept. 23: Workshop on sentence fragments, fused sentences, and comma splices (Handbook) and on paragraphs and writing summaries. Sept. 27: Commas. semi-colons and colons. (Handbook). The different kinds of academic essays and arguments. Essay ex.: “The Impact of Sports on Childhood Aggression.” Sept. 30. 1st Grammar quiz (sentence types and sentence errors). Workshop on commas, semi-colons and colons. Summarize “The Impact of …” Oct. 4: First Assignment Due. Effective Sentences I (concision, parallelism and passive voice). Rhetoric, non-argumentative persuasion and pseudo-reasoning. Introduction to writing a critique. Analysis of “Health Canada” (essay is on Brightspace) Oct. 7: 2nd Grammar Quiz (commas and semi-colons). Workshop concision, parallelism and passive voice. Critique examples. Oct. 11: Effective Sentences II (word choice and dangling modifiers). Comparing “Kiddie Thinks” and “Health Canada.” Example essay and critique. Oct. 14: Workshop on word choice, dangling modifiers and critique examples. Oct. 18: Writing the Critique. Introduction to writing the research essay. Generating/clarifying a topic and narrowing down a thesis. Oct. 21: 3rd Quiz (clarity and concision). Workshop on creating a research question and topic/thesis development. Oct. 24-30: READING WEEK Nov. 1: Critique Essay due. Thesis to argument. Analysis and using evidence. Drafting and outlines. Nov. 4: Workshop on developing an argument and using evidence. Nov. 8: Kinds of essays and the research essay. Fact based and explanatory essays. Evaluative and proposal/solution essay arguments. Research essay topic suggestions. Gathering material, documentation, and integrating sources. Nov. 11: Workshop on using library to find research material and journal articles. Examples of evaluative and proposal/solution essays and examples. Nov.15: Research Essay assignment due. Identifying moral claims and making moral arguments. “Health Canada,” ethical standards and controversial topics. Principled and utilitarian arguments. Essay topics for Research Essay take-home exam. Nov. 18. Workshop: examples of moral claims and arguments Nov. 22 Critique and the research essay: analysis of “Women Police Officers” and using research material. Nov. 25 Workshop. Research essay examples. Nov. 29 Writing the research essay. Dec. 2: Workshop on research essay. Dec. 6: Review of research essay. Dec. 9-22: Research Essay due during exam period.
