The purpose for producing the image was to create awareness of the very existence of this specific marine species, which is a largetooth sawfish, a very threatened species off the coast of Australia. The technologies that were used to create the image was most likely a standard digital camera. The rhetorical effect of this technology is the high quality of the photo well demonstrating the beauty and obscure appearance of this threatened animal. The purpose of this image is similar to the purpose of producing the image in order to spread awareness of the existence and the importance of this wildlife species. The message may be to make people more concerned that this species is threatened and nearing extinction, which may make the viewers to feel sympathy and therefore may even do something to help. The compositional features of the visual message contribute to its purpose by clearly showing the features of the largetooth sawfish, like the body, the mouth, and the “teeth” on the snout, creating a sense of importance to the animal. The place where the image appears is in the article promoting the benefits of zoos and their conservation. It may also appear in the Territory Wildlife Park in Australia where the photo was taken. People who are most likely to encounter it are the general public who can have access to see this animal in person or looking up articles such as this one. The photo does not look like it was placed strategically since it was toward the end of the article, however, it might keep the reader engaged with the article all the way to the end and remind the audience how critical the life of this animal is.
