Tori Mei MUS 110 Discussion Board 10

1. Compare the state of Dominican music during Trujillo era with the time period after his death. Provide examples from the reading and/or presentation to support your idea. Dominican music during the Trujillo era sounded extremely censored in a way unlike the music we hear today. Based on the book, it was said that Trujillo ‘was of humble origin’, which may be true. However, he did still imprison a lot of musicians due to incorrectly following the guidelines that he had set. 2. Discuss the involvement of Dominicans in mainstream U.S. hip-hop and provide links. In terms of living in New York City for so long, I would say that the hip hop culture has been extremely strong. According to the article from BEMEZCLE, it stated that people in New York are most influenced by hip-hop. Hip-hop gave people the freedom to freely express themselves, including artists. Find an example of a Dominican artist (not discussed in the book or presentation) who is active in a genre other than merengue, dembow domincao, or son. Provide links. Cardi B is an active artist in a genre other than merengue, dembow domincao, or son. She mainly does rap. One of her most iconic songs ever would be “WAP” which features Megan Thee Stallion. The song has been very popular and people on Tik Tok have been doing the dance trend nonstop.
