Discussion Board Teams

Practical Nursing Program (Flexible), Centennial College PNUR103

February 8, 2022

An ineffective team that I remember that I was involved with in the past was when I was in business class in grade 12. We were assigned a topic and had to present to the class what was the best environment for a business to grow and be successful. There were 4 members in the group, and we were all the same age, around 17-18. One team member took the lead as the chair and asked us to look over the textbook about what qualities a modern business should have to grow and achieve success. As a team we assigned who should discuss what and in what order, I summarized what we should do to make sure everyone knew what part of the topic they should discuss. It seemed as though we all agreed on what to do and did not have any conflicts whatsoever deciding who should do what and in what order. The day before our presentation, I looked over the powerpoint to see that one group member still has not posted anything to their slide. Then I took initiative and tried reaching out to them and asked them if everything was okay, and if they were able to finish the work, I got no response. I panicked and decided to add notes to their powerpoint so that the job could be done and we could present the day after. The person who did not finish their work came to class apologized and said that they were really busy and could not do their work due to personal issues, they presented what I wrote down for them. We were able to get an A, but we were not an effective team. We lacked communication, sharing responsibility, trust, motivation, and commitment from one member.

According to Canadian Fundamentals of Nursing (Potter,et al., 2019) On what makes an effective team and what are the team functionings, effective teams are supposed to share responsibility for outcomes, have shared goals, trust, accountability for assumed roles, role boundaries, motivation, and commitment to a common task (Potter,et al., 2019). Even though we had shared goals of getting a good mark on the assignment, we did not have proper role

boundaries and we lost commitment, trust and responsibility from one member. An effective team needs to have roles and norms in which all team members follow. A team should have a chairperson (rotating role), a summarizer, recorder, and re-director (Potter,et al., 2019). I felt as if me and one of my team members who took lead in the beginning only followed role boundaries while the rest of our team just wanted to do the job and get it done and over with. Even though the chairperson is supposed to be a rotating role, it only rotated between me and them, while the rest of the 3 just listened. Norms are the standards team create so there is a tone for teamwork (Potter,et al. 2019 pg.302). The norm for our team was that we all keep in touch, and finish our work before we present, all 3 of us followed norms except for the person who did not do their work. We shared responsibility at first, but in the end the last member did not want to share their responsibilities. I trusted my team member to finish their work before the due date, which is why I did not check the slideshow until the day before we had to present. One thing I could have done to make the team more effective was to check it earlier, or to remind everyone the due date and to make sure that they finish it way before it was due, and if I saw that they didn't answer earlier, I could have communicated with that group member to ask if they needed help instead of waiting last minute, so that I did not have to finish their task for them. I also could have also assigned roles in the beginning to everyone in my team so we could have been more organized.
